I have read some of the forum threads on this and there seem to be some driver related problems with it. My questions are as follows:
1) If I install Vista 64, will I have problems running my favorite games like MMOs and RPGs at max settings with nvidia 8800m-gtx. That is, will I run into a myriad of driver problems with the 8800m.
2) Are the most common sound and printer dirvers supported on this OS?
3) What are some issues you ran into with your Vista 64 bit install?
I would prefer to to use Vista 64 to get the 4gb ram I am installing to be fully utitlized.

You already know what printer, sound card, and other hardware you have. Try looking up the drivers to see if there are 64bit versions. Some will, others might not.
1) Most likely no, since Vista actually does a very good job of 32/64bit mode stuff. As long as the 8800m-gtx drivers are okay that is.
2) Read my comment...its pretty random what is and is not supported.
3) For me? When I tried Vista64, my scanner's PDF creator didn't work and Foxit's PDF Creator didn't work either. So again, mostly driver support and researching to see if your most commonly used programs will work. -
Thanks Greg. For example, my scanner works in Vista 32 with Windows scanner software but scanner manufacturers software does not. So these types of incompatibilty issues is what I am interested in.
-
Definitely focus your research on the peripherals that you plan to use. The notebook itself is designed from the ground up to be Vista compatible, so you'll never have a problem with driver support for the NP5793 itself, but it's entirely possible that some printer, scanner, mouse, keyboard, etc... might choke up in Vista.

I've faced a few software issues and driver problems (incompatibility), but I find that all the major sofware developers are beginning to make their sofware compatible with Vista 64 bit. For example, when I bought my laptop, I found that iTunes was not compatible with 64 bit Vista (I needed it for my iPod Touch), but 2 weeks later, they released a 64 bit version... Check the drivers that you commonly use, and see if they're compatible.

I already replied to this guy in a PM since he PM'd me about it for some reason, but for anyone interested, the 5793 ships with a driver disc with all Vista x64 drivers on it, even if you opt for no OS installation. They *assume* you will be using Vista x64. Everything is supported. They even have some newer drivers for things on Clevo's site, probably Sager's too. Even their nVidia drivers are fairly current (174.33), which is awesome seeing as my old Dell went pretty much it's whole life on hacked drivers since Dell *never* released new drivers after the original ones. ; ;
As far as peripherals outside of the laptop, you have to check manufacturer sites of course. And for games.. So far I haven't run into anything that has refused to run. I tried some older games, like Tribes 2, which runs sick fast, and I also got Final Fantasy XI, my MMO of choice, going with no issues. -
Thanks for the replies guys. I figured the problem would be more with peripherals so hopefully I wont get too hosed on my scanner and printer models.
Good to hear that video and sound drivers are not a problem at least that alleviates much of the worry right there. -
yes 64 will run perfect on the 5793 i ran it just fine but i ended up back to 32 due to to much "other" things i have not liking 64..

Is it possible with licencing and such to dual boot your machine with Vista 32 and Vista 64?
-
Also, just so this isn't a totally off-topic post: I'm planning on ordering a np5793 myself within the next couple of days. I know that it comes with 32 and 64-bit vista installation disks, but I hadn't heard about the driver utility disk you mentioned. That's a nice thing to know. Is there anything on it that isn't pre-installed from the factory, or is it just a back-up disk? -
If you own a 32 bit version, you do not automatically get a 64 bit license -- if thats what your asking. -
The driver utility disk had both the 32 bit and 64 bit version of the video drivers. The other drivers did not require the distinction when I installed it. -
I only use the 64 bit OS when emulating GC or something like that

For anyone who attended one of the MS "Heroes Happen Here" events, they gave away Vista Ultimate SP1 32-bit, but the key they give will happily activate 64-bit Ultimate. That's how I activated mine. 8) -
Having dealt with Vista 64, well , drivers were the only issue I had. 32 bit is less likely,if at all , to have driver problems.
I had issues with my Lexmark printer,my Creative USB sound card and some older games .
Other than that, pretty much smooth sailing all the way. -
Currently running Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit on my Sager NP5793. Everything is perfect and flawless!
Vista 64 bit worth it on 5793?
