I tried to load Vista 32 on an external HDD-USB connected and the Vista installer said that setup does not support installation on a USB drive.
Is there a way around this? It seems that I remember reading about other people doing this in another post, but I am not sure about that.

Are you sure you're not confusing that with creating a bootable usb stick? There is a thread/guide written by NBR member Zfactor that shows how to make a bootable USB stick.

hmm you could always take your hd from the casing, put it in your laptop/pc, install windows on it put it back in your hd casing and select boot from usb in your bios?

I will check that thread, however I am using an external 600GB HDD, not a USB stick. I have a 2GB USB stick but I don't think that is large enough to hold the OS. Any way, high capacity USB sticks are too pricey an option for me. External USB HDDs are much cheaper.
