    Hey guys,

Short: Boot to XP, I'm running (CoreTemps) at 39-41 celsius (so fans turn on and off, since they see mto kick on around 41-42 deg c). Boot to Vista and suddenly I'm at 48-49 deg celsius, just sitting at the desktop. (Giving it a few mins to possibly cool down from booting doesn't do anything.) Is this expected? (ie: Aero?!)

    Long:

A few months back I used PM to split off 30GB and installed Vista Ultimate (SP1) 64b... and then ignored it :) Alas, for some reason, I am tempted to run it again now and then in a few months can just do the in-place upgrade to Win7 GA.

Anyway, figured I'd suck down SP2. It is funny that Vista was happy to be at SP1 and didn't suggest or find any updates, so I sucked down SP2 manually. Now I just need disk space. And PM doesn't work.. so time to download Knoppix live CD. (Using Vista's shrink option doesn't seem to work on the XP NTFS part .. turn off snapshots and pagefile, and still won't let me shrink more than 1GB and I've got 40GB free :/)

Anyway .. should Vista cause 10 deg higher?

Thats pretty intimidating. (Does Win 7 too?)

I mean, I don't want to run 10 deg hotter. Thats silly, and needless wear on the machine.

    Any clue?

    jeff

(Edit: A thoght I just had .. both are using Avast with up to date profile; since I don't run the Vista much, I wonder if Avast is doing some scanning for its new profile or something. I should disable Avast to see if its hitting the CPU temps.)

Also try disabling the Aero effects to see if that drops the temps any. From the hits I've seen doing a quickie google, it looks like the additional processing needed to support the Aero features may be responsible for some or all of the additional heat.

Yeah, but I just can't imagine it. I could maybe slide them a degree or two, but a full 6-10 deg is just uncalled for -- thats hotter than when running Crysis :)

Knoppix -> ntfsresize is doing its magic right now, but when it wraps up I'll try a few things and see how the CPU temps react. Something weird must be up.. this isn't right. If it is right, it bodesw poorly for the future .. Win7 being derivative and all.

(I'm running X9000 with the enhanced cooling system, even though I've got the 570RU .. running at 39 deg celsius spoils you and I don't want to give it up :)

Edit: I mean, I had expected a slight overall heatup and some heat in the GPU; if they're driving the CPU for Aero in the presence of an 8800GTX, they're doing it very wrong.
