Okay, so quite a few of us have been buzzing about Mythlogic's premium LCD options.
I'm making this thread to give them an opportunity to post photo comparisons, with which we can attempt to determine the differences in quality, between the different color gamut LCDs.
Requesting P170HM LCDs:
Standard 60% gamut Glossy
90% gamut Glossy
72% gamut MATTE
So, the stage is yours.
******08/14/2012 UPDATE - The default screens compared in post 2 have now changed, so the comparisons in the next few posts are no longer valid. Jump to the end of the thread, if you wish to discuss the new options.

Hi Everyone,
Ok so here is what we are looking at here today:
The AUO Optronics B156HW01 Family, all LED backlit and they all fit basically any 15.6 LED backlit computer that came with a FHD screen.
- The V.0 Which is the default FHD Glossy screen in any Clevo 15.6 laptop of either core generation, has a 60% Color gamut
- The V.1 Which is the default FHD Matte screen that you see in the P151HM1 (8130), also has a 60% Color gamut
- The V.4 Which is an exclusive screen that we are putting in Clevos (Lenovo also uses them in the W510), FHD Matte screen that has a 95% color gamut.
This will be updated later when I can get outdoors and take some pictures in the sun, right now its snowing.. a lot..
First lets go to some basic and boring color squares.
V.0
So from here you can defiantly see the higher gamut screen as there is a bit more saturation and color definition.
Next Up Black and White Performance.
V.0
Next We have the full on view of the screen. This one you can very much tell the higher gamut screen from the rest of the pack.
V.0
And now some viewing angles for each. We have to the left, right, above and below for each version.
V.0
V.1
V.4
Finally I we made a really large image of each that includes every angle and the full front view at the same time. Please note these are 16MB+ Images so they will take some time to download.
V.0 Combined
V.1 Combined
V.4 Combined
Also here is a picture of the V.4 after is has been fully color calibrated
Here are the color calibration specs for you guys who like those numbers:
Raw White: 265 nit
Calibrated White: 214 Nit
Black: 0.547 Nit
Raw Contrast (Raw White / Black): 484:1
True Contrast (Calibrated White / Black): 291:1
Delta E Max (Max Was RGB Blue): 1.58
Average Delta E: 0.57
V.4
End of Life Information
Ok so the bad news is AUO has discontinued the B156HW01 line as of Q1 2011. We got the opportunity to place one more order directly with AUO as of today after some groveling. So we have one small shipment of B156HW01 V.4 screens coming our way in a few weeks. But the ENTIRE B156HW01 line is no more, that would be the V.0 V.1 (V.3) V.4 and V.7. It has been replaced by the B156HW02 line which as of right now only has 60% gamut screens and only in a glossy finish. They have not confirmed a matte finish screen nor have they said anything about a new high-gamut screen. So here is hoping another manufacturer steps up with some new screens.
For other questions, Please feel free to PM us. Any other questions, put them in the thread, we'll be glad to answer them.

Price of each screen?

Wow nice work Mythlogic
..
-
Nice stuff on the 15".
The 17" is the main event, though. Can't wait to see those. -
other people may want to see the 15.6" in action hehee
-
This is exactly what I was looking for.. Thank you Mythlogic for posting.. Looking forward to seeing the 17" options when they become available.
-
Great, thanks Mythlogic.
-
Thanks Mythlogic!
-
It's just that I only have money on the heavyweight bout. -
Very nice! I'm really glad I spec'd the 90% Gamut 17.3"!
The majority of my "work" that isn't spreadsheets and word processing is graphics work. And I have been thinking of more video work. This screen is going to be a joy to work on! -
Assuming I get a Matte-screen laptop from you, can you help swab the screen and any part for my next Mythlogic laptop, say 3-4 years later, at which cost?
Thanks

wow great to see some one offering screen options for the Clevo, i hope you are going to carry the 8100 when it gets released.....

-
Very tempted to switch to the 6970m and the better screen Mythlogic...
How much of a difference does it make if I'm indoors 95% of the time in fluorescent lighting? I've been using a glossy screen on my XPS for years and I haven't had any complaints, but the colors are pretty good on this, and viewing angles much better than my wife's Asus and even her macbook. Can't remember which panel it is but I have the LG one...
15.4 inch Black Wide Screen WUXGA TrueLife LCD with 2.0 MPCamera for XPS M1530
Thats what it said on my form... -
They say that a picture speaks a thousand words, but these pics speak into the millions! Thanks for posting.
-
Wow, I really wish the Sager resellers did this (Hint Hint)!!!, that v.0 is a piece of a crap, and I would gladly pay $200 more for the difference on those screens. Being a gamer I really appreciate good colors. I usually use Nvidia's digital vibrance to boost my colors a bit, and it really helps, but does not help the accuracy unfortunately.
-
That is quite an amazing difference. If they were to add this to an X8100 refresh whenever it comes out, I would be quite the happy man.
-
Is there a screen upgrade available for the x7200?
-
, they are the same thing, just with more options to pick from lol
-
Yes, but it's glossy not matte. Matte high gamut screens will be available in Apr. -

-
@Justin,
What's the gamut % of the 120Hz matte screens? -
Justin@XoticPC Company Representative
To be honest I have never looked it up. The model # used on the 120Hz Panel in the G73JW-3DE is LP173WF2 (TP) (B1). After doing a quick Google search I didn't see a spec sheet for it. Keep in mind this display has a different connection on the display and could not be moved over to another model. We have already tried that
We were going to try and put it in a 8170 but obviously would not work.
-
^^ Thanks for the info! Yeah, ASUS likes to complicate things
-
Kevin says 90% gamut Glossy and mythlogic says 95% colour gamut MATTE -
15.6" is the 95% color gamut matte screen
17.3" is the 90% color gamut glossy screen
A little confusing yes, but thats the difference there. We will be posting the comparison of the 17.3"'s soon as we get them after the new year holiday
Had the wrong picture for the V.4 B+W photo. This has been corrected. Thanks jima5446 for catching that. -
So there's no 15.6" glossy screen with 95% color gamut?
One more thing:
15.6" matte screen with 95% color gamut VS 15.6" glossy screen with 60% color gamut colour gamut?
What is better? -
In my opinion the 95% gamut screen is better. Just to put it in perspective, I swapped out the screen and people who know not a whole lot about PC's noticed that the screen was defiantly different and better. -
Simply put, higher gamut screens can display deeper colors (more colors) making the gaming experience more "alive". Such panels are normally used for color critical work.
Note: One needs to properly calibrate the screen, otherwise the colors may look oversaturated. -
I do want an NP8170 with a high gamut glossy screen.
Mythlogic, thanks for the great work!!
As seen from my screen, the v.4 full on seems a little bit reddish? -
Yes, the reddish tint has been a plague for RGBLED's and B+RG LED screens..
You definitely need to calibrate the display to get rid of the madly reddish pop in the screen. -
-
Looking back at the pictures again. For me the prefect screen imo would be the V1. Looking at the picturers where there is a ton of photos (color and black and white). The V4 looks way too vibrant for my taste. To my eyes it seems that the V1 has the most realistic color reproduction out of the bunch, followed by the V0 and then the V4.
If realism is not what your looking for, just eye candy and vibrance then the V4 would be the way to go.
This is coming from a guy who prefers the iPhone 4's screen over the Samsung Galaxy S's screen for the same reasons, sure black production on the OLED is awesome but the colors are way to vibrant for my taste.
But just incase I am looking at this the wrong way, anyone please correct me if I am wrong. -
1. The V4 needs to be calibrated, after which it will produce more realistic colors than the V1.
2. You can always adjust the screen to your own liking, while still taking advantage of its ability to display a larger palette of colors.
Better to have than have not. Even uncalibrated, you can see how superior it is to the V0/V1. It's ceiling is just that much higher. -
-
I am actually looking to buy an x7200 this month, so I am curious what is out there or if I can purchase a machine with a different screen from a dealer. -
This is how a properly calibrated 150% gamut screen looks like!
Scroll down to the bottom of the review. -
As I said, I'll get some calibrated pictures up too soon, just wanted to get some pictures up as there was soo many requests. But yes the calibrated pictures will just make it more obvious -
Is there anywhere that I can read about these screens in more detail? How does the brightness on it compare to say a 17" Macbook Pro as an example?
Thanks. -
I am pretty sure Mythlogic implied that one could purchase the X7200 with the screen when it's available. And thanks a lot for the pictures, Mythlogic.
-
For some comparisons Review Apple MacBook Pro 17" Notebook (Aluminium Unibody, 17", 9600M GT, T9550) - Notebookcheck.net Reviews says that the average brightness of that screen is 247 nits
The V.4 glossy panel (17.3") that we put on our screens has an average brightness of 285 nits. So its a bit brighter.
We can also send you a full datasheet on it if you would like. -
-
Most of what we see and use are the TN panels.
Alienware m17x has a TN / RGBLED panel.
Precision M6500 also has a TN / RGBLED panel.
The B156HW01 V.4 panel mythlogic is selling is a TN / B+RG LED panel, which is inferior in terms of gamut to the RGBLED.
The standard backlighting nowadays is WLED, which lacks in color gamut.
The reason HP's DC2 panel is best is because it uses both of the best worlds: IPS, or In-plane-switching panel, and RGBLED backlighting.
Screens are an interesting topic to look up about, so I recommend reading up some explanations on different screen technologies.

Just a quick cross-link if you want further reviews of the panels (color space, delta E, contrast ratio, etc.).
Thanks, mythlogic, for the photos! I added links to your photos on the first post of the other thread. -
We are doing our best to have the option ready for most Clevo/Sager systems by the end of May, so stay tuned.
