So, my totally awesome Sager computer is one month out of warranty and now it will not power up. Some of the lights come on and sometimes the fan will come on but that is it. there are no beeps or anything. BIOS will not open either. I am pretty sure my motherboard will need to be replaced but I'm not positive. A guy at exotic PC said the last motherboard replacement he saw on a one year old computer was around $460 plus labor. I really don't want to spend that much to fix my computer which isn't even old yet. Sager also said they will charge me $45 just to inspect it and tell me what is wrong. then there is all the shipping charges. i could be out $100 even with no repairs made.

I really don't know if I should just forget about Sager (I tried right) and go with someone who has better customer service... or have sager repair this one...or buy a new computer out right...or buy a bearbones computer and try to switch over as much stuff as possible from my broken computer (harddrive, RAM, DVD player, processor, screen, etc.) I would appreciate any advice you guys could offer

You forgot about your local computer repair stores!!!!!!!!!!!! MANY local computer stores inspect laptops/desktops with no diagnosis fee no matter the brand of PC (at least for me in Washington, D.C.). I have 3 of these stores on speed dial believe it or not lol.

First try local computer shops, then once you find the problem through the diagnosis, look for the cheap parts online. Once the cheap parts arrive, go to your local computer shop and they will fix it at a reasonable price. (From my experience) :)

You should try doing more research and see if you can figure it out yourself. I'm sure you're a smart man/woman... don't give up.

I hope you resolve your issue asap. We are all here for support. :)

I'm not sure I'd call anything you described as bad customer service. Granted, it'd be sweet if they went the extra mile & went ahead & covered it, but the pricing they're talking about aren't that surprising for a low-volume custom laptop. It's not that much more than costs you'd see with a consumer level Dell, for example.

I can empathize with your frustration. Concerns about something like this happening are why I went for the 3yr warranty, even though I'm quite capable of my own laptop repairs. Laptop parts aren't cheap (particularly circuitboards, since they're model-specific), and neither is shipping. You might try seeing if there is any way to buy a longer warranty for it now, resulting in a sort of split-the-difference in cost with Sager and/or the reseller. I have no idea what their options are, though, and they have no obligation to do so.

    doesnt sound good :(
im guessing if your still on deployment its ruddy hot out there at the moment.
when was the last time you cleaned your fans out.
few things to try. do you always have your battery connected. if so remove it and try booting with just mains. then try with just battery and no mains.
you could also try a cmos reset. remove battery and mains and hold power button down for 10-15 seconds. now remove base plate and hunt for the round cmos battery. remove it and replace it and put back together and then try booting up again. before you replace base check that ram sticks are seated correctly.
this might not help much but its worth a go so you can say youve tried them.

Yea try the CMOS battery pull before going to the motherboard replacement stage. Also if the CMOS trick doesn't work, try seeing if you have mis-seated or bad RAM, check the SODIMMs one by one. You might get lucky and either have a corrupt NVRAM (Fixed by CMOS pull) or dead SODIMM

thanks for all the advice. i will look for some local shops. also i didnt mean to imply that xoticpc or sager has bad customer service but I have purchased two computers from them myself and refered three other customers to them. I don't expect rockstar treatment but at first they were not even offering me the chance to pay for repair because I am the second owner of this laptop. I will not purchase another laptop from Xoticpc. They also said I could not purchase an extended warranty. Even companies like HP have allowed me to purchase a warranty on a three year old computer and one time they replaced a motherboard for free (out of warranty) when I was in Iraq.

MrDj, I'm not on deployment anymore. I need to update my profile. But I tried all of your suggestions first. Unfortunately it didn't change anything.

I found a local computer repair shop that does free diagnosis. They told me it was the motherboard or GPU. They couldn't find a replacement though so I guess this computer is shot. I think my best bet is to buy another similar computer and use as many parts from my laptop as possible. Then I will sell the rest to anyone who needs parts. Its a shame to lose such a nice computer that is barely a year old but I guess I should always get the three year warranty. You live and learn.
