Hello,
I used to have a W230ST/4800MQ and I was pretty happy with it. I purchased a W230SS/4910MQ and I am quite worried by the heat and the noise.
Fan is working at high speed (but not max speed) most of the time. HWMonitor shows temperatures from 83C to 95C. Best low I could get was around 65-70 but no more than few minutes. I did not play games (yet) but spent most of the time in VirtualBox VMs working with my developper stuff : Netbeans, Gulp, Chrome, Java, etc.
Right now I am wondering if there is a problem with the cooling kit (iNote Gamer) or if I simply made the wrong choice purchasing a such powerful CPU for a such little computer.
I will try to undervolt with Intel XTU and buy a cooling pad. Got any advice about what to do or what to buy ?
Also, I tried some XTU stress tests, and I see 100% CPU utilization, but CPU frequency never go more than 1-1.2GHz. Does the thermal control put a leash on my CPU ?
Thanks

It could need a repaste. For such a small system and a high end CPU, you're better off with IC Diamond or Gelid GC Extreme if you put new thermal compound on. 95 C is pushing your luck, and it sounds like you're not even really pushing the laptop. Definitely check that paste, as well as for any damage to the heat pipes or nuances with the heat sinks.

did you try re-pasteing the thermal paste? That might help..

Yeah I agree with the above. The 4800MQ and 4910MQ are not a whole lot different from each other in heat; only about 200MHz. The cooling system should be about the same too, which means either your chip really sucks or your paste needs reapplying. I would check the latter first, and good luck!

The issue wouldnt be with the CPU in this chassis. While its a valid thought, it has been tested to make sure it doenst have overheating issues. Repasting as others have mentioned would be a good next step.

Thanks to all for your advices.
Finally, I did not make the wrong choice about the CPU.
I made the wrong choice about my laptop supplier : the heat sink was not in contact with the CPU !
They delivered a brand new laptop without screwing down the heat sink properly !
Since I have done their job, HWMonitor give a 40-50C and the XTU CPU stress test made the temp jump at 80C max. -
Its getting really worrying all these reports of machines being shipped with poor or no contact on the CPU. Glad you figured it out and got it fixed but I would contact your reseller about the issue, its possible that CPU is damaged. It throttles at 95C and if the most you were seeing is 1.2GHz, its been under incredible stress.

Well, the good news I did not spend too much time working with this machine.
I sent a (furious) email to the reseller this morning. No news so far.
Is there any good tools to do a complete checkup ? I would like to be sure that any parts of the laptop has not been damaged. -

Keep using the computer as you normally would. You can run some stress tests, but what you really want to be certain of is that it won't display problems in your day-to-day uses. -

I would not get a 4910MQ in this machine. It's a waste of money and performance since it can't really properly cool it to run optimally. 4810MQ is highest I would go, but 4710MQ is really the best choice. It offers +200MHz overclock with Intel XTU which will perform about same as 4810MQ at stock. In any case, repaste and check for contact to die.

The issue was addressed to the rebrander : then send me apologies and some thermal paste (Artic). I repasted myself, and everything seems to be under control.

Glad you got it fixed, a bad paste job definitely will do that.
