I have been having problems the last few days with my video drivers. I have been using windows 7 fine without any problems up until a few days ago.
When I start it up normally there are artifacts, the screen lags, and completely locks up. It works in safe mode, and I rolled back my driver to a standard VGA driver thats 4 years old, so I assume it's either a problem with my video card (Geforce 9800m gtx) or the driver (NV17609_V64). I'm thinking its the driver, because when I reinstalled it and rebooted, the same exact thing happened.
Is there a newer driver that I might be able to try, or an alternative to the one I am using now?
Thanks so much.

Okay, so I searched around and found a more recent update to the driver. When I tried running it, it wouldnt even get me to the login screen. It would just freeze up on a black, empty screen and then reboot after a while, asking me if I wanted to run the startup repair utility or something (which did nothing).
So I am running out of options here. Replace my graphics card? New computer?
I'm desperate, please help! -
i posted the newest driver release last night but as you are having problems i would recommend trying the 186.81 which imo have been the best driver nvidia ever released.
are you using driver cleaner pro in safe mode to clean out all remnants of the old driver. -
Does the screen show artifacts during post before windows loads ?
Try cleanig out the vents as you could be overheating ? When was the last time you applied new thermal past to the GPU ?
Artifacts usually mean overheating or the card is damaged but hopefully your card is okay.
Good Luck.

Hello,
Drivers do not just break after using them for a while without problem, and it should run anayway on the clean install. If you go to nvidia site they provide proper drivers for the Win7. I am using the latest one from there and it runs without problems.
The problem with you pc might be hardware. -
I have never applied thermal paste to the GPU, is that necessary? What worries me is that the artifacts appear on the "Starting Windows" and the login screen, which I would assume would mean that it is not overheating because the computer was just turned on!!
I just cleaned it out as well and I am still experiencing the same issues.
If it is a hardware issue, like a bad video card, is there a place where I could buy the same 9800m GTX? I've looked online and it doesn't look like they sell it anywhere by itself. -
what part of the world are you in so members can advise where to look.

I live in California.
I just talked to a service rep from SAGER and they said that the new card new would cost $870 + shipping + labor... or $330 refurbished.. Should I go with them? I'm thinking about it because it would just be easier. -
