    how does Silent Mode works?

does it completely turn off the fan or does it lower the fan speed?

once Silent Mode is activated, can one still use the laptop? or does Silent Mode put the laptop into Sleep Mode. (hibernation)

You can use the computer while in silent mode. With previous models it made the laptop completely silent.

The user manual for the np8690 says
However I've seen a couple of reviews saying silent mode on the np8690 doesn't work (or possibly makes the computer louder) although I am guessing it will be fixed. I heard someone say they removed a sticker covering the CPU vent and it made silent mode work. So maybe it's that simple.

It seems that the silent mode is buggy on the W860CU, I hope a future bios will fix that problem...

Try posting that question in the owner's forum.

I will say however that with previous versions of the laptop that it completely silent (the fans don't spin up) as long as there isn't much of a load on the cpu/gpu. When most people are using silent mode they are using word/web browsing/on battery. If you start gaming while in silent mode things heat up and the fans turn on.

It sounds like maybe you want to use silent mode to leave your computer on at night running some multimedia conversions of some kind? I personally doubt silent mode can stay silent in that case, the i7 processors kick out quite a bit of heat.

So if you do get a reply to your question just keep in mind about processor/gpu load.

    Silent mode W860CU explenation:

"It sets the fans to fixed speed, so it will slow down fans (and CPU clock) when the system is under load thus making it quieter, when system is idle on the other hand it makes it a bit louder by bringing the fans to the same fixed speed which is higher than minimum fan speed when idle."

Its not buggy, it just work different way. Useful when stressed under load.
