My W860CU powers off randomly after I installed a 940XM as the title says. It ran fine with the 920XM.
I have already flashed the .14 BIOS and the error occurs in the first 2-5 minutes after the Windows login. While running it in full performance mode und updating Windows 7 Performance Meter, it shuts down (no BSOD) without any warning. The same happens when it is set to battery saving mode and the M-button is activated (after the reboot).
    Same problem with different RAM.

So, CPU broken or are there some ways so check what could be wrong?

I would bet on either a power draw issue or a bad cpu.

What power brick are you using? What are your temps?

What thermal paste did you use? what method?

Did you observe the correct removal and install sequence of the spring loaded screws?

Did you ground yourself to avoid static discharge during install?

It could be simply a bad CPU but it could also be an issue where it overheats due to problems with the heatsink / thermal paste.

    Thanks for your quick replies.

    - power brick: Li Shin 20V 6A
    - temps after booting until it powers off: 38C- approx. 46C
    - thermal paste: AS5
    - method: My usual one, spreading a little dot of thermal paste til a very thin layer covers the die, be careful to let AS get in touch with the die and nothing else. I did this many times before.
    - I can not remember if I tightened screw 1-2-3-4 but I did it it diagonally.
    - I always put out the battery and press the power on button. If I get in touch with some components, I ground myself using a radiator attached to the wall as I do not own an antistatic wristand. I changed the GPU at the same time without a problem (so far as I can get).

I have noticed that I have got less time in Windows the second boot. But temps should be ok..?
Did something important change like M860TU -> M860ETU?
How could I ensure it is a bad CPU if it does not even finish the Windows 7 Performance Meter test but boots fine?

I found 940XM is mor thusty than the 920XM, you need to watch you temp carefully

it may not matter which mode you are using,
Window 7 index will use full speed

Sorry, what did you mean? Thirsty?

As I said temps are fine. It is powered on for three minutes at a max if you deduct the two minutes of booting time. My 920XM has gone up to 85C when heavily stressed. I'll see if I get time to reapply AS5 when I got home.

    Have you tried running memtest?

I want to say that the 120w adapter you're running there might be overwhelmed, but if you're pushed the 920 85*C I don't see how that can be the case. I would run memtest to confirm hardware instability.

if your laptop ran with the 920xm i dont think its a power issue.
it could be that the .14 bios you installed doesnt specifically support the 940xm yet?
i dont know if you can try benchmarks and such since you said it freezes w/in 5minutes of windows boot.

You boot into memtest, if it passes that then it's a software problem.

Have never run memtest before, is there anything I would have to adjust in it before testing the CPU?
Can not try any Windows related benchmark.

Power brick is the standard one came with it. I do not believe Clevo vendors changed it for W8x0CU with 940XM?

Same behaviour with BIOS .13 and .14., both POST correctly.

    You can get Memtest86+ here:
Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
Basically, burn the .ISO file to a CD and boot from that. It will run automatically and keep running until you shut off your machine. As JohnnyFlash said, if your machine can't run that then there is definitely a hardware problem . . .

“I have already flashed the .14 BIOS and the error occurs in the first 2-5 minutes after the Windows login.”

“I changed the GPU at the same time without a problem (so far as I can get).”

So you updated the bios and changed the GPU thermal paste at the same time as the CPU?

Just a pointer for future reference, when making changes, only change one thing at a time and verify everything works okay, then move on to the next. It makes it a whole lot easier to isolate a problem when it occurs.

I would change back to the 920 to verify your system still works okay. That way you can eliminate the re-application of the thermal paste on the GPU (If that is in fact what you did) and that your bios flash is not causing any issues.

Also you do not state what kind or ram you have, if it is the HyperX then it’s possible that is your problem. Remember your memory controller now is on your CPU. The HyperX memory has a history of giving people trouble on the i7’s. Some people have good luck others just can’t get it to run. The i7’s specification is to run on 9-9-9-25 memory timings, and the hyperX runs at 7-7-7-21.

It shuts down while performing memtest.
I checked the thermal paste, next thing will be the 920XM.

I replaced the graphics card but this card was already built in before. I only changed both because I was in a hurry.

    I tried memtest with 2x2GB Transcend 1066 CL 7; 1x2GB Transcend 1066 CL 7 and 1x2GB Geil 1333 9-9-9-24 so it has to be the CPU's fault?

Another thing I did not mention and I can sureley remember it has not done this the first Windows shutdowns: While performing memtest and being in BIOS, it starts to beep and the NumLk and Caps LEDs flash every second 50 seconds long before it shuts down.
If I restart it right after shutdown, it does the same but earlier.

So, situation resumed: Boots and performs nicely, after 3-5mins beeping and flashing starts for 50secs, shutdown.
After rebooting, beeping and flashing start nearly immediately and it shutdowns after 50secs.
Heatpspreader feels warm but not hot.

Exactly the same with beeping and all with the 940XM?
What RAM do you use right now?
Did it work with the Hyper X before your CPU upgrade?

    "We must construct additional pylons"

I think the first thing you should do is run a test on the CPU. Before you go on to memtest, I suggest you run prime95. Stress the CPU, RAM, and try to see if you get errors and when. It might be an adapter problem or it might be a CPU problem. Bad ram usually doesn't give you random shutdowns, it gives you random BSODS with specific errors of "memory read error". Also make sure you've plugged in all the cables and small connectors in the motherboard after you've installed the new CPU.

    Um no.

The ETU brought a dual only machine Core 2 Quad compatibility. The W860CU has had no such major hardware changes.

He can't run those tests, because it doesn't stay in the OS long enough. Memtest does test the CPU as well as memory, but if it's not even running that, I think it's safe to say that there's a major problem.

OP: Do you still have the original CPU?
