My Kobalt G860 (W860CU) has developed a fault todayWhenever I bend or flex the case, or even just type, the display flickers. I think the LCD cable is broken.
I have the service manual, but it only covers the most basic disassembly procedures which are pretty obvious anyway - nothing really beyond changing the CPU and other straightforward upgrades.
I've opened the machine up to take a look, but the cable seems pretty well buried. I've had the CPU and fans out, and removed the keyboard and hot keys, but I can't figure out how to remove the graphics card without breaking something. I've undone the four screws attaching it to the heat sink, but it's still stuck fast.
From the various photos I've seen, it looks as though the GPU heat sink is retained by just four small screws and the stickiness of the thermal paste - right? It seems pretty firmly attached, and I don't want to go levering it off with a screwdriver if there's still a fastener somewhere!
Can anyone please talk me through how to dismantle the machine far enough to access both ends of the LCD cable? I'd prefer not to have to send it in for repair if possible.

The gpu heatsink is attached only by four screws as you said. It might feel like it's stuck but this is only the thermal paste which has hardened. I went through the same ordeal. Try wiggling it around and pull it off. You might hage to use some force the first time. Also remember to remove the fan before removing the heatsink.
Best of luck to you! -

Also try running the machine for half an hour or so so the gpu heatsink warms up. Then unsticking it should be alot easier as the paste will soften with heat.

OK, thanks guys. Will have another go as soon as the replacement cable turns up.
