Hi.
I've got a big issue with above combination.
When I try to install the latest Driver ( Link) my Notebook crashs.
I tried to install it over the old Driver (which has been delivered with my NB) and I receive a black screen during the installation. I was waiting for 20 minutes, but nothing happened.
After a complete fresh reinstall of Windows 7 x64 I tried it again and the installation finished without error message and I had to reboot the system. After I did that I received again a black screen and nothing happens.
After that I rebooted again and opened the "safety mode" (sorry, don't know the english option, in german it's "Abgesicherter Modus"). I searched for the graphicscard under system and it was listed as ATI 5800 series (with the old driver it's 5870HD).
After a deinstallation and installation of the old drivers everything was working fine.
The reason why I want to install the newer driver is, that I have issues that that my NB sometimes is freezing then I maximize for example a video at youtube. I hope that maybe a driverupdate will fix that. Furthermore the new driver should include some performanceimprovements.
So does anyone has an idea how I can solve that issue? Has someone maybe the same problem?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Kind regards,
André
PS: sorry for my bad english. I hope everything is understandable![]()

hi Andre and welcome to nbr.
if ati is anything like nvidia drivers you will need to use a program called driver cleaner pro in safe mode to totally wipe all traces of the old driver.
(please note this is used for nvidia drivers but hopefully its the same way to clean out ati drivers as well)
could someone else confirm that this is the best way to load ATI drivers before Andre starts.
Here's a step by step guide on the best way of updating the drivers:
Download driver cleaner HERE
this is a great program which will delete all traces of drivers as sometimes when you uninstall them they leave behind files which can cause issues when you come to install new drivers. We’ll use this in a minute
Download the latest drivers for your operating system 32/64bit
Extract/ copy the files to a temporary directory such as c:\temp
Go to the control panel > program and features > scroll down the list and find ATI > then select ATI and click uninstall. It will ask if you want to restart the system.. click yes
Press F8 on startup and go into windows in safe mode.
Run driver cleaner and select ATI drivers.. then clean.
Go to the control panel > system> device manager > graphics card. Right click on any present and click uninstall
Restart the system and go into windows normally. Install the new ATI drivers listed above which you put into a temporary folder
Restart the system.. and fingers crossed all should be well! -
Hi MrDJ,
thanks for your detailed instructions.
I followed them step by step, but still have the mentioned issue.
The installation was working fine and finished without error. But after the reboot the animated windows logo comes and after that I receive a black screen and nothing happens. It's simliar to the error then the resolution is to high for the monitor.
Therefore I rebooted again and installed the old driver under safety mode but with the new software. This is working fine.
Therefore it really seems, that the driver makes the problem.
The graphicscard was listed again as "ATI HD 5800 Series".
What can I do -
Any updates/solutions to your issue? I also have an 870CU with the ATI 5870HD but I have not attempted to update any drivers or anything outside of Windows Updates and normal updates for Firefox etc. Too scared

Not sure I’m the best source of help here because my upgrade to the 10.3 drivers was quick and painless. Instead of trying to figure out what went wrong for you, let me just review what worked for me. It ought to work exactly the same for you. You’re starting at the right place: ( http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/windows/Pages/radeonmob_win7-64.aspx)
From there, initiate the download. You end up with “catalyst_mobility_64-bit_util.exe,” which is simply a downloader installation program. Run/double click on that file to install the downloader, which opens automatically and asks you to select a save location for the driver installation file. Save to the desktop; you can move or delete it later once everything is installed and working. It will download the file “10-3_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc.exe.” Just run that file and let AMD do the rest. Select “Install” at the first prompt, which opens the Install Manager. Select your language and click “Next.” Pick “Install” at the next screen. At the next screen select “Express” and accept the default installation location. Then accept the License Agreement and off it goes.
There’s not much more to it than that. There is no need to uninstall the old drivers. The Install Manager takes care of that and cleans up after itself.
I apologize if this sounds too simplistic, but the process is designed to be that way. Don’t over-think it.
Good luck. If that doesn’t work, we’ll find another way. -
I have exactly the same problem. I want to install the newest driver and Catalyst 10.3 on my W860CU with an ATI 5870HD.
I also tried it as "The Revelator" wrote but I still get a black screen when rebooting after driver installation.
Unfortunately the clevo ftp seem to be down so I can't even get their drivers and my reseller gave me a CD with freaking Nvidia drivers only.
Would be great if somebody knows a solution or something.
PS: I tried it several times on a brand new Win7 X64 system. Perhaps I should install something else first...? -

EDIT: I just managed to get into Windows once: I plugged in my projector (800x600 resolution) and after some seconds I got my desktop screen on my notebook. I could set the right resolution and everything seems to work fine. Nevertheless it didn't change a thing. After a reboot I still get my black screen and can't even reproduce to get into windows again using an external monitor. Weird! -

Very peculiar. There are reports of the same problem with the 10.3 driver in the ATI section of the Guru3d Forums, mostly on desktops. The cause has not been identified, but the following procedure worked for some:
1. Run the install package as per normal and wait for it to crash out.
2. Open a command prompt (Start / Run / CMD )
3. Type “CD C:\ATI\Support\10-3_mobility_vista_win7_64_dd_ccc\Bin64”
and press enter
4. Type “ATISetup.exe -install -output screen” and press enter
If all else fails, you might give this a try. I have not tried it, so can't vouch for the results. Wish I had a better answer. -
I tried it, but it's still not working
The installation is running and at one Point the screen becomes black and doesn't wake up -

Sorry I couldn't help. You may be better off just waiting for the official release of the new 10.4 drivers, which should be very soon.

To fix your issue you have to flash your 5870m's bios
You can find it here : ftp://usftp.clevo.com.tw/ALLBIOS/W8xxCU/
I had the same issue. Now, with this new bios, all catalysts works fine without black screen before windows login. -
Did you happen to save your original bios? I would be curious to see what the differences are in RBE.
-
Do you have a guide to flash the ATI bios ? I have already flashed the W860CU Bios ? Is it nearly the same way to flash ?
Payne -
That's the same way to flash
You can follow this guide : http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=416916 -
Everything works perfectly fine now. Although I apparently already used that vga-bios version I could install 10.3 CCC and reboot without any blackscreen! Problem solved. -
I'm trying toget ahold of a couple more Mobility 5870 XT BIOS but the anonymous log-in for the Clevo site isn't working. Any suggestions?
-
You mean this one?
-
Got it - thank you
-
Also, if its asking you to log in, try it in firefox or Chrome. Someone mentioned that it only ask for log in info if your in IE.
-
Apparently the original BIOS allowed your 5870 to automatically downclock on the W870CU but the update does not allow this and clocks stay at 3D unless you manually force a downclock using the GPU Clock tool.
W870CU + ATI 5870HD = Driver issue
