Which runs cooler between the two HDDs for the M860TU considering they are both 320GB? Thanks.

I can only comment on Seagates, since I have mainly used them for my notebook. -
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
Alright. I've asked a question in the other thread regarding the performance of both, hope you read it. Thanks.

Can anyone please post their HDTune benchmark results of the M860TU laptop with Western Digital 320GB 7200RPM (WDC WD3200BEKT-22F3T) ?? I would really appreciate a screenshot of this since I have to compare them with my own benchmark. Thanks!

From an M570RUU, but same drive (though the version with the free fall sensor)

This is mine:
is it normal? -
Not a M860TU but thought it would be interesting to compare a couple of the early SSD's.

@theriko
you think my hard disk performance is fine?
Why do some people with the Seagate Momentus have results that reach a 89.9 MBps max? Does this mean Seagate is a better drive than ours? -
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
@theriko
also, what is your windows experience index for disk transfer rate? -
I think your HDD performance is fine.
My WEI in Win 7 is 5.8, though in vista it's 5.7
I don't think that the seagate is necessarily a better drive, as some people seem to get 89MBps from the WD -
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
Ah. I have a 5.8 WEI in Vista, that's weird, WEI is really not reliable.
Can you lead me to a link that shows HDTune results that got 89MBps with the same drive as mine?
Should I not be thinking that I have a defective drive? -
-
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
well, that's what you get for the 5200rpm so it's normal.
-
This thread made me download HDTune and benchmark my HDD, so here are my results with a Samsung 160GB 7200RPM HDD.

i get some random "click" sound on my laptop which i suspect is coming from the hard drive since i have a external wdc passport hdd that does the same prob. Is this normal? This occurs randomly and seldomly only.
-
I normally associate that with Seagate hard drives. I think its due to technology used to spin down the disks when the drive is going in idle.
-
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
So is this something I should worry about because I have a Western Digital?
-
i think we all get it. mentioned before and replys were nothing to worry about.
-
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
Ahh. Was there no negative effect on the drive's performance? So regardless of the drive brand, every M860TU experiences this prob?
-
is it just a slight click now and again and not in a regular pattern.
there were a few posts about this when the m860tu first came out and the general census was its nothing to worry about.as far as i can remember it wasnt just WD. -
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
ok. thanks for the info
-
I don't get it. But don't worry. Its just a feature. An annoying feature. But thats all it is nevertheless.

Is this strategy of PCMW (placing some kind of aluminum foil under the hdd bay) effective in reducing temps of HDDs?
-
Its standard on all 8660/860Tu's
And probably yea b/c if it didn't they wouldn't put it in as it would cost them extra money
Well the aluminum is all over the inside of my 8600 too so Im guess its standard. XD -
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
Really? Sorry about that, all the while I thought that it is only done by PCMW, I read somewhere about it, I think, though I'm not a 100% sure about it.
-
AFAIK, it's the sound of the hard drive going into a low-power state.
I wouldn't worry about it unless the click sound occurs alot more often (clicking every few seconds). -
I bought one of the launch day models, which didn't come with the aluminum; does it really affect the temps much?
-
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
Well, for my laptop, I still get high temps with it, especially when I'm defragging, it reaches as hot as 66C, I don't specifically know the reason why it reaches that hellish temp.

Sorry about that Chaz
-
the wd will run cooler imo than the seagate in most cases
-
^ That's what I remember too; there was a notebook hard drive temperature comparison (anandtech article? I think) last summer that placed the seagates on the high end, which is also confirmed by people here. The difference is sort of minor (couple of degrees), however.
Seagates should be spec'd to run at a higher temp, on the other hand (60C? is what I remember) and have longer warranties (5 years across the board, afaik). -
-
It doesn't confuse its brain, the fans are simply related to the CPU and GPU temps only, so the HDD temp makes no difference.
-
So is a notebook cooler necessary to run the M860TU, or is it simply a "good thing to have"? I'm trying to decide if I need to get one right away when I get my notebook, or if I can put it off awhile until I have more cash.
-
If you have, you are accustomed to it, then you can put it off til you get more cash. -

I see that Seagate Momentus is already 7200.4 and has a 500GB version of it. I want to upgrade my laptop's hdd. Is this Seagate a good choice?
-
The coolest running 500gb drive is the HTS545050B9A300 by Hitachi
The 5K500.B runs 5400rpm, but unlike its rivals, this drive uses a maximum of 1.7 watts, which is about 0.8watt lower than the WD5000BEVT
The idle power consumption is lower too, so if you are looking for the best battery life this is the drive for you.
It also performs slightly better than the WD5000BEVT as well

Is that Hitachi a 7200RPM drive? I want a 7200RPM for my laptop.
-
According to round-up article in tomshardware.com, Seagate Momentus 7200.3 have the highest read/write transfer rate (min, max, average).
So if you want performance, go with Seagate.
Dunno about 7200.4 though.
I myself prefer to stick with Hitachi. Hitachi HDDs have the lowest failure rate right now. -
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
Does Hitachi have a 7200RPM that is 500GB?
-
The 5K500.B is 5400rpm.
They do have a mobile 500gb 7200rpm and a 750gb 7200rpm going through testing at the facilities. They are not available to the public though, as they are still perfecting the firmware, a practice Seagate isnt too good at.
However alot of their resources have been going over to SSD's. Hitachi co-manufacturers and designs them with Intel.
It was actually kinda funny how it came up. I was talking to a friend at Hitachi and I asked him if they were coming out with SSD's and they said they were. I then commented on how they need to beat Intel and he said why beat ourselves.
K-TRON -
@Kevin
not yet.
and from previous experience, if 6 months passed since competitors produce a certain capacity break, Hitachi probably gonna pass that certain capacity and produce bigger drives.
example: Hitachi might pass the 500GB and straight to 750GB 2.5" drive
*speculation* -
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
Ahh..
@k-tron
Did your friend mentioned anything about the release date of the 750GB one? That would be a great drive I think as the highest capacity out in the market is only 500GB.
Should I wait for that?
With the Seagate 500GB 7200RPM, is it compatible with my M860TU? Is the highest supported interface of my laptop only up to SATAII?
SSD's are too expensive for me right now and in no way considering going with those things. -
K-Tron's post proved my speculation as true.
Hitachi will go straight to 750GB model.
Ofcourse there will be lesser capacity in the new Travelstar 7K750 family, so dont worry about the 500GB one. -
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
Well, I want the highest capacity as possible, not mentioning the price.
Is the firmware of my current hard disk (WD 320GB 7200RPM) upgradeable? HD Tune says it is upgradeable but I can't find any way to update it. -
-
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
Is that the highest SATA version available for most laptops including mine?
-
No release date yet.
Manufacturers have two options, stick to the date or bypass the date
Some will say okay its March, lets get it out by May1st regardless of whether it works or not.
Hitachi does not do this, they keep running their set of drives over and over again until the performance and quality level is as close to the maximum that they can get. This can sometimes take additional time, or it can be released earlier than expected. It is determined by how long it takes to make the firmware perfect.

WD Scorpio or Seagate Mmomentus for M860TU, which is cooler?
