Other than the resolution difference, I just wanted to know what the major differences were between these two screens and what people's opinions were about them. I've heard things favoring both sides.
Thanks all for answering so many questions!

Sorry everyone, I realized this wasn't probably the best place to post a hardware question.
The reason I did it here was because when looking at discountlaptops.com, I found that I could customize both the 5720-C and 5720-V exactly the same, same processor, same RAM, same HD, same graphics card, same price, same everything...except the screen. In other words, I can make exactly the same laptop except one has a WSXGA and one has a WUXGA.
I'm probably just being paranoid but since I'm about to drop around $2600 on this thing, I just dont want to have buyer's remorse, wishing that I had gotten the other screen instead of the one I have.
This is the reason I wanted to know what each screen was like, just so I won't feel like I could have been better off buying the other screen.
Thanks! -
I have the WSXGA screen on my Sager, and I find it offers more than enough screen real estate. I was able to take a look at a WUXGA in a store and I thought it was far too tiny for my taste (even with the font size jacked up). To each his own, however!
-
i have the WSXGA on my 5320 and its a good size, so i guess WUXGA would be reasonable for the 5720.
just my guess, have not experienced it myself though.... so could be wrong -
^^^it doesn't really work like that wsxga on a 15 in. is basically the same size as a wsxga+ (17in widescreen laptops all use this + size screen.
so how i see it a 5720 with a wuxga+ screen is going to have just as small as text as a 15" wuxga screen -
If your a gamer, then you DEFINATELY DO NOT WANT A WUXGA!
At that rez, even an overclocked 7800 gtx wont be able to handle smoothly most modern games that are out and will be out from now. I actually wished they had a notch below the WSXGA, basically a WXGA+ which is perfect for gamers in relation to absolute frames per second.
Yes you can lower teh resolution on that WUXGA or WSXGA, but it will then look like your running a game at 640 x 480 with 8xAA. Basically everything on ur screen will be blurry and fat lined......nasty!
So for LAN gamers that need super fast FPS, try and get WXGA+ with that 7800 gtx. Even then i doubt it will run ut2007 smoothly.
If you do Ocassional ing, RPG gaming, dont care about having 60+ fps constatly, then get WSXGA. Its the best of both worlds. And its perfect for programmers, reaserchers etc.
If you are a mostly a programmer, reasercher, not so heaver laptop gamer, then get the WUXGA. Also if your vision is like superman's and you want to reduce its ability and want to wear glasses or contacts for the rest of your life, then you might want to get the WUXGA also. IF your into graphics editng, design, then WUXGA might be helpful.
However remember that even if you got a screen with too high of a resolution for your game to be played on your laptop screen....then get a CRT moniter and play on that.
Conclusion, if you want the best of all worlds, then get WSXGA. You dont care about laptop gaming that much, get WUXGA. And if your a LAN party Die-Hard gamer only then get WXGA+ or if you stretch a bit, then WSXGA.
If you get WUXGA or WXGA+ you might easily be dissapointed.
But if you get WSXGA...its gonna be very hard to be dissapointed, as its got best of all worlds.
Note: sager dosent sell notebooks with 7800gtx and WXGA+ screens, have to look elsewhere for that.
I just ordered a sager 9750 with WSXGA btw. enjoy... -
this is highly subjective. I'd suggest trying to see them in person.
Personally I was used to 1024x768 on my 17" CRT, when I went to my 15.4" WSXGA+ (1680x1050) I thought the text was pretty small. Now it looks great, and what I used to use looks big and klunky by comparison.
I can tell you for sure a 15.4" WSXGA+ will have the same size text as a 17" WUXGA (or close enough you wont be able to tell the difference with the naked eye).
to answer the OP's question, It depends on the actual screen. It seems like there are usually small differences in brightness, color saturation and the like, but it varies from one model to the next, and I've never seen reports of a large difference.
hope that helps. -
For a 17 incher, get wuxga+. More screen estate is always good. I have wsxga+ on my 15.4 inch screen and I can read it just fine.
Oh, and 800x600 > all for games (yes even on a wsxga+ screen, it looks perfectly fine). -
oh, and I agree my next lappy will be a 17" at WUXGA. -

The resolution is personal preference as previously stated - on my Sager 5320 15.4" , I have the WSXGA+. My previous two laptops had WXGA (1280x800), so I didn't want to go any higher for fear of the resolution being too fine for my eyes.
WSXGA+ is perfect in a 15.4". I wouldn't go any higher, but that's just me.
Also, there aren't many games at all that my 5320 could have run at WUXGA - at WSXGA+, over half of the games I have are. Looks wonderful!
If I had gotten a 17, I might have gone WUXGA, because the screen is bigger and thus so are the pixels. -
Screen size/resolution ratio is important for viewing only.
But if your gaming on your laptop, screen size is IRRELEVANT! all that matters is your RESOLUTION, and the higer native rez u have the more powerful graphics card you need. Its as simple as that, unless you dont mind playing at non-native resolutions on LCD screens, which is usually ugly!
So yes, Im sure WUXGA will look great on that 17" screens. But you can forget about gaming at that resolution at even 30+ fps with most games, even with a 7800 GTX...overclocked.
Read my previous post, it gives you a better idea.
Again, if your into gaming.....SCREEN SIZE IS IRRELAVENT FOR speed.....all that matters is your resolution. (your cpu, gpu, memory aswell, heh) -
Thanks all for the feedback, as of now it seems like since I would like to do a lot of gaming, I will probably go with a WSXGA screen. But I'm going to wait for a while since my laptop clunker I have now still has a little life left in it...so I don't need a laptopr right now so I'm going to see how these new laptops coming out in the next couple of months fare before buying a laptop.
Thanks for the help everyone -
I guess WSXGA is optimum for notebooks for play and other stuffs today.
-
I have a 17in screen with wsxga i think its perfect. I really dont think unless you are a photoshop junkie that wuxga is important. I mean how much realestate do you need. Now a 20in screen Wuxga might make more sence.
-
Depends a lot on your game.
I was testing my WUXGA 5720 (7800GTX) at various graphics settings in Unreal Tournament 2004 and found that for the most part, this game is CPU bound even at very high resolutions and with graphics detail maxed out. In other words, it runs just as fast at WUXGA as it does at WSXGA because the graphics are a little older and can't push the card past it's limits.
In other games like BF2 Special Forces which is even more graphics intensive than BF2 I noticed that running the screen at lower resolution improves framerates noticeably. This game doesn't support wide aspect displays anyway so in the end it's best to play on a standard 4:3 monitor if you have that option to avoid the stretching effect.
I really can't see a significant visual quality hit from reducing resolution on the WUXGA and running less than native. With such a high quality display it scales very nicely and actually looks better running out of native than some older LCDs did running at native. Running out of native resolution isn't as big a deal as it used to be IMO.
One consideration that nobody has mentioned would be the pixel refresh time of the different monitor options. Pixel response is a more important capability for gamers and I wonder if the response time is the same for the different monitor options from Sager. In my experience with the WUXGA I find the advertised 25ms response time is good but there is still a noticeable effect during fast games.
I expect you would have to compare the two options side by side to make a truly objective determination. -
Well said mate,
But I still prefer WSXGA instead of WUXGA;
for
-Battery life
-games
-eyes - readability (wuxga is very small, hard to see)
-money
-Response time for WXGA and WSXGA monitors better than WUXGA (today and for near future)
