    Hello,
I am trying to get windows 8 on my new sager, and I know the upgrade costs $15. But does this mean I have to buy Windows7 + pay $15 to get the upgrade, or can I just install an older version of win 7 from another computer and upgrade that way?

    Regards!

it depends, if the old windows 7 is not an OEM license (didn't come bundled with a laptop) you can upgrade that to windows 8 on your new machine, however your old pc won't be able to use the win 7 key anymore. not t the same time running otherwise the key will be blocked by MS.

The preview is standalone (don't need windows 7), but sooner or later you may need to activate it (previews, RC builds usually have 1 -3 month "license" preview).

The cost of standalone Windows 8

    Windows 8 Professional Upgrade - $69.99 (save $130)
Windows 8 Pro Pack – Product Key Card (no media) - $69.99 (save $30)
    Windows 8 (Full Version) – OEM $99.99
Windows 8 Pro (Full Version) – OEM $139.99

taken from Prices and packaging for Windows 8 go public | ZDNet
which is being sold by Newegg. you can also contact xoticpc and inquire how much their OEM license costs which is usually cheaper than the full version(although I prefer the full version so I can move the OS to a new laptop or desktop when i decide to upgrade)

That's a limited-time (until Jan 31 IIRC) special price for the upgrade version, which requires a previous OS. It also is a download, no physical media.

Not sure exactly how they reference the eligibility date for Windows to see if you qualify for the $14.99 pricing. When you go to Windows Upgrade Offer - Landing Page they will ask for your purchase date and the key code of 7. Maybe they will then check the data base to see when the key you provided was first entered in for activation, if it finds a date before June 2nd you wont get.

The offer is only for computers with 7 purchased from June 2nd to Dec 31st.
