You know I have had a old falcon NW system for 6 years now that has done me very well, and then used a SAGER laptop that just could survive anything, and now I am wanting to buy a laptop for around $1200 dollars that does not need to do anything special except run fallout 3 when it comes out, that, and survive without breaking down over the years.

Do you guys think that going for a clevo/sager is a good idea with that in mind, or should i get something more mainstream and generic?

Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

i dont think clevo has something at that price.

dell would be the best, the vostro 1500 is way batter than the 1520 for reference

Yeah the price was an issue but I figured I could go for a used one or something.

I really don't have much faith in dell though. I have used 3 different dell laptops and all of them had issues and were not reliable.

Do you think it's just not worth it to buy a clevo/sager on this budjet though?

If you tack on about $200 to your budget you should be able to get into a NP2090. The unit in my sig was $1480 from Xotic but I add a few things that you might not consider important such as bluetooth and the larger HDD.

You could probably get the Sager NP2090 for around $1,200 if you skimped on a lot of useful and low cost items. Play with the configurators on the site belonging to a reseller of your choice and see what you can come with. Where you live will likely determine which one is best for you. The one in my signature cost me $1,550 without the extra $50.00 discount I could have gotten if I used cash (Maybe I am old fashioned, but I like to have some more security behind a payment I make).

Take note that while most Sager's are commonly Clevo models, the NP2090 is a Compal. Specifically it is the Compal IFL90 so you could look for similar deals on other rebranded versions of this computer as well.

I would say that the resolution difference from the WSXGA+ screen is definitely worth only the $80.00 upgrade that it was for me at the time, but those time of decisions will be up to you and your budget.

For some background the 2090 is a 15.4 inch screen with a built in camera, fingerprint reader, and wireless N card. It has a sleek black case and more glossy type paint on the back of the lid. There are some reviews on the site and some threads with pics if you want to check them out. It uses the GeForce 8600M GT Video card with 512 mb.

All you have to do is stay with the 2Ghz cpu, and get a 5400RPM hdd. I paid an extra $150 for a 160GB 7200 hdd and that got me to $1350. Get your ram from newegg for an additional 30-50$ savings.

    BUT, I'd recommend an Asus.

He can't afford an Asus. Like the other members said, up your budget a couple hundred dollars and you should have enough for a nicely-equipped Sager NP2090.

Well it looks like it's down to a NP 2070 and a Dell VOSTRO, the price is the same, the main difference is that the dell has 3GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 DIMM, rather than 2GB for the NP. The Dell also comes with a bigger hard drive and (120 vs 80) and Windows Vista. Whereas the NP has no OS.

AND the dell has 1 more year of warranty, (albeit horrible service IMO).

It seems to be pretty heavilly in favor of the dell. But you know I have a bad feeling about dell, and i know I like clevo.

I will think on it, but, I am pretty sure I will go with the clevo.

    Any last thoughts people?

I canceled my Dell order for a reason, 30 day wait and then a 16 day (at least) delay. You might have better luck with the vostro, those seem to ship faster but as you already pointed out, service is horrible from this company. That counts for a lot in my book.

You can get a bare-minimum Sager NP2090 for under $1200 including shipping, but you'll have a 80GB HDD, 1GB of RAM, and a T7250, which could be improved. You can stick with that and get an extra gig of RAM later to make it 2GB and I'm sure that'll be a good laptop, but as others had said, if you can scrounge up an extra $100-200, then it'll give you a lot of options. My Sager in my signature turned out to be $1453, and that's including shipping, but since Intel cut back on processor specs, you can get what I have roughly in my sig but with a T7500 2.2 GHz instead.

Configure here and see what you can get.
