Hi, I am extremely unsure on which laptop I should get. I am going to need this for a boarding school (plug outlets everywhere so battery shouldn't be a problem). First I was thinking the NP5796. I thought it would be big, so then I switched to the NP8660, then I went back to hte NP5796, and now I'm figuring this laptop is going to last me a while, and I don't think the NP9262 will get outdated (powerwise) within the next 3 years or so and i plan to do monstrous gaming on the laptop.
The only thing that's preventing me from getting the NP9262 is the weight of that monster! I have never had a laptop before, so I don't know weight relative to other laptops. My sister, though, has a Macbook Pro 15.4", and that's not too heavy at all. How heavy is the D901C relative to the Macbook Pro 15.4"? I can probably handle more than double the weight of the Macbook Pro. What about if I want to use it on my lap? Will it feel insanely heavy/painful? What about if I want to use it on an airplane? Will the laptop break the food tray? I am very worried if I get the D901C i will rergret it due to the weight. I will be carrying it all around school every day due to theft issues and I don't want my back, neck, and shoulders breaking after a week of carrying this thing back and forth. Is the included carrying case comfortable to carry? I am really considering this due to the fact I can have 3 hard drives, 2 graphics cards, and a quad core desktop processor.
I plan on getting the laptop in about 2 months or so (maybe more, maybe less) since my school won't allow me to get a laptop on my first day (personal reasons). I hope you can answer all of my questions. Thanks![]()

you will feel the pain! I am haveing a 6.5 Ib laptop and it's already hurting my shoulders, now imagining yourself carrying an 8 pounds or 10 pounds laptop on your back... good luck if you don't need spine surgery when you get old.

The base weight of the Sager NP9262 is 11.55lbs - if you have any dumbells, but a 10-pounder on your lap...and that's two pounds less than the base weight. If you're comfortable with that, get the 9262 by all means. But this laptop is really made to sit on a desk most of the time, and to be moved from place to place every so often. If you're going to be carrying it everywhere with you, like you said, I'd say go with something lighter like, well, any other Sager laptops. The NP5796 has a base weight of 8.7lbs and the NP8660 has a base weight of 7.1lbs.
Oh, and about the Macbook Pro - that 15.4" weighs in at 5.4lbs. -
It is heavy. It is not something you want to carry a long time on your back.
PL -
12 lbs. without the power brick.
-
12 pounds.... feels fine on back if you have a good notebook backpack.
I am used to it after 2 years. -
what notebook backpack would you reccomend?
-
Targus XL ... no doubt.

Targus are expensive... got any cheaper one that works well?
-
Most notebook backpacks do not have a big enough pocket to fit this kind of notebook... not to mention having enough comfort with the straps.
And its not that expensive... around $50. -

I am looking for a good bag around 10 bucks plus shipping...
-
$10... is not going to give your investment much protection.
If you want, you can find a notebook sleeve for $10 to protect the notebook, and then you can put the notebook in any backpack. -
Go to Sam's Club. They've got great Wenger/Swiss Gear back packs that'll fit the D901C at a reasonable price, ~$39.

I think I will make sleeves myself, and buy a big bookbag for it...
-
Good laptop bags are also more comfortable carrying heavier weights, and also they are built so that the outer and the part that touches your back are protected more than a normal bag would. Why not invest in something that costs 60 that will protect your 3K+ laptop.

Because I think it would be more fun to find something cheaper, I like to do things myself ...

I ended up buying a sleeve for 1 dollar

That one dollar sleeve will not fit the 9262, lol its designed for a 15" and some 17" sleeves may also not fit the 9262.

making a little modification it should fit...

I agree with what everyone else has said, you'd be better off buying the Targus XL so that you have protection for your investment (and your shoulders as well), I have this backpack, and it feels comfortable no matter what I put into it, the shoulder straps are strong but they are comfortable to the shoulders, the padding helps too, and it looks just plain awesome, as it was said before, $50 is not too much to protect your $3,000 + investment.
Normal backpacks that are not designed for notebook-carrying usually do not give you as good support on the shoulders and nor provide the protection a specialized backpack would give you, also, the Targus XL looks plain awesome as well, and it looks like that it would last for years, I ordered it with the laptop.
I had never used such a comfortable backpack ever before, it has a lot of pockets and three different zippers for files / documents, another one for books, and another for the laptop, but you can fill whatever you want into them, they are big enough. By the way, I am a girl, and the weight does not hurt my shoulders, and I am not a body-builder nor I am muscle-framed, I am 5'8".
Edit: Also, that $1 dollar notebook sleeve you bought won't be able to take the monstrous weight of the NP9262, it will most likely end up ripping up in no time, if you want to go for a sleeve, then buy one that fits the laptop, and that is durable. -
I think Rocky used this laptop on his back to exercise. But, really, when I want to work out somewhere, like at my desk at work, I just get the D901C in it's back and use it as weights. It's HEAVY!

LOL I can't believed that no one noticed I was buying the sleeve for NP8660 hahaha

Edit: The post I wrote about the Targus XL was also directed to the OP, even though it was not in a direct way explaining about the perks and features of the Targus XL, and the NP9262, and my own experiences with that backpack. -

Good, I just wanted to light up the spirit a little bit
I never said that I didn't realize you guys thought I have anything other than NP8660, though it is true that I haven't received NP8660 yet...
Sorry for the joke guys and girls! -
I'm in the same situation as the OP. It took me a while to decide between the d901C and the 570TU. In the end I decided that I didn't need SLI nor that much HDD space (I'm on only 160gb unformatted on my desktop, lol). So I got the 570tu. Unfortunately I had to send it back for pixel issues and school starts for me tomorrow... Anyways about the backback targus XL, is there anything con about it that I should know?
-
Thank you everyone for all your help! Will the Targus fit school supplies and such? I need to fit all my school stuff in there (probably a couple binders, maybe a textbook every once in a while, some reading books, folders, etc.) and I don't want my backpack to be crammed up and it starting to get uncomfortable
. I think I have dealt with over 15 lb in the past (3 or 4 text books, 2 binders, some folders, etc. in one backpack), so I don't think this willl be an issue.
-
yep,as you said it, no real issue with weight then. it can get tiring if you're going to carry it around without a proper bag tho, so do get a comfortable one..
-
I'm still unsure of which notebook I want to get, but are there any good rolling backpacks that fit the NP9262? Do any of you guys know if this rolling backpack willl fit the NP9262?

The weight isn't really an issue. Soldiers carry way more weight on their back than a 12 lbs laptop + textbooks. I've gotten used to carrying a full pack, plus a rifle and marching for miles so I'll be fine. The Targus packs are known for having good weight dispersion, which will make it feel like you are carrying less weight.
-
The targus XL is pretty big though if you arent going to be putting to much into it so it might look a bit bulky. IF you can spare a little extra money the Slappa Velocity Matrix/Spyder is an awesome bookbag, just got mines 3 days ago and i can fit the 570TU, Zalman NC2000, Mousepad, mouse, headphones, 2 binders 3 spiral notebooks and still have a little space left over.
-
If your final consideration is the bag to carry the 2k+ notebook then take a drive to Best Buy or Office Depot and be done with it.
Weight of the NP9262/D901C?
