So I have vista business 64 bit that i installed on my new np8660 yesterday... i originally had xp pro installed on it so the setting in the bios for the commonly used OS was set to XP. Now that i have vista installed and try to change the bios option over to vista it BSOD's right as windows begins to load....what gives? it works when set the XP though....odd....installed SP1 as well...

also....is this going to make a difference in HD performance or does it not really even matter? cause i think that's the only real difference the setting has

If you're talking about AHCI (which it sounds like you are)...you need to install the AHCI driver during your install...there are other ways of accomplishing this after the install, but I recommend a fresh go at it.

Look at the first part of this thread for some guidance:

ya about that....took 10 hrs yesterday fighting with windows to get it installed correctly...it would randomly reboot right before installing the OS or couldn't confirm that my HDD had a valid partition (even after trying to install chipset and sata drivers) finally got it to work after reinstalling XP pro and then going from there to get my business 64 up....point being im not really up to a reinstall... know of any other fairly simple fixes without one? maybe just some registry changes before the bios and the correct drivers or something for the AHCI or is it not even worth the effort....the np8660 seems speedy as is and it seems AHCI helps most in booting rather than real-time performance..

There might be a way to run a repair and install drivers during the process (it would be very near the beginning). But, I think a "repaired" OS is poo, personally.

I'm not savvy enough on AHCI to tell you the real benefits, but I know it is better, just not how or how much.

You should be able to find someone who repaired it w/o a clean install, I have seen it, but I have no recollection of where...sorry I can't be of more help.

    Ciao.

Did we used to call a repair a "dirty install" in the old days? 95?
