I now have a Dell Studio 17" notebook that weights near 4kg i guess and it is OK for me to have it on my knees when I'm sitting on sofa and reading web sites or watching YouTube, etc... Well it is warm but that warmth is OK for me.

So I'm thinking of buying Clevo P370EM and while I think that i won't go with dual GTX 680M's, just one, but i am thinking to go with the extreme CPU - 3940XM.

Do you think i will still be OK to follow my behavior to take this beast with me to read news, emails, watch videos to have it not on a desk with perfect ventilation from the bottom? Or the temps will be too high? Would i need to put some hard straight pad/mat on my knees/hips and put the notebook on it instead?

Please share your thoughts and experience.

what do you do to need a 3940xm? if you only read news, youtube, the temp should be relatively low as only a small fraction of the CPU would need to be utilized to complete those tasks

i work with video/audio transcoding, batch photo processing and some gaming. I want the beast to deliver me fast results for a few years, so that's why i decided to buy the fastest CPU...

While it probably wouldn't hurt unless you're doing it for extended periods, I would still advise against it. Just set up a coffee table in front of your couch or get a laptop cooler that you can use in your lap.

you'll microwave your nuts if you go sli and game on your lap :S, expect lonely Christmas's. unless your going to overclock i wouldn't recommend getting a XM unless you plan to overclock, save some cash get something maybe 100-200mhz lower, the difference wont be noticed in real time

With work time is money, if he has specific work to complete then that's up to him to decide if that is worth it.

You have two options, get a flat try to use it on, or get used to a way to hold it without covering the vents.

The alternative is to look for a machine that does not vent from the bottom directly, many out there can provide a single 680M and 3940XM.

Do you think it is better to get 2 x GTX 680M SLI and i7-3840QM instead for the same price?

if you will be transcoding, 2xgtx680m will help a lot. OpenCL and CUDA.....that will be a lot faster than a simple XM cpu

Seems like Handbrake doesn't support CUDA, but Sony Vegas does
