Hey all,
I know that this laptop is rich in spec, but what/why does it weigh 7.1lbs (assuming w/battery) ??
Just want to know if there's something i can do to make it more "portable".
I really want a gaming laptop but i share this with my wife and she wants it to be slim and semi light weight.
SO far my closest choice is a Thinkpad w500.
the m4400 did cross my mind but a bit bothered with the ddr2 ram and the luke warm reviews of the build quality. RGB LED is my main attraction.

high performance parts lead to larger cooling system lead to a larger case leads to higher weight. not much you can do about it.

It needs to be big in order to accomodate the large cooling system necessary to cool the extremely powerful GPU and CPU. Also, the large size is necessary for enough thermal dissipation throughout the laptop so that it won't seem hot. The fact that it houses so many things under one roof makes it heavy. The weight is probably closer to 9-10 lbs with the battery, since I know the battery can easily tack on 2-3 lbs on the laptop depending on how many cells the battery has.
I think you both should compromise. She wants a thin and light and you want a gaming laptop. A good choice would be the Dell Studio XPS 16, because it has a very gaming capable ATI Mobility Radeon 3670. You can play any games you want on it and it is definitely going to be lighter than the NP8662. The Studio XPS also offers the RGB LED since that is something that attracts you.
Notebookcheck Benchmarks (not really accurate, but gives you a good approximation of performance) for the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3670:

The Studio XPS has a decent price for its performance and will give you better battery life than the NP8662. I think this machine is a perfect compromise between gaming performance and being thin and light. -

because the battery and hard drives and the fact there is alot of parts crammed in

Keep on using your NP8662 and just buy the wife a completely different laptop.
-
- A light, portable for the wife (consider a netbook if battery and portability is paramount).
- A competent gaming laptop for you--
- And perhaps, a laptop just for work--
It took me awhile to get this myself. But this is the setup we have at home and everyone is happy. -
Are you working around a budget? I say buy yourself the np8662 [because everyone needs their own toys
], and buy your wife a small netbook which are extremely cheaply priced these days. The netbook would meet all her needs (portability especially), and you'd both be happy! This is IF you're not worried about spending a little extra $$$

i suggest you wait for the new models with the HD4860
they have the horsepower of the 8662 and come in tiny packages (14 or so inch)
asus is coming out with a few models soon-ish i think -
really, i thought it was only offered in the 15 and 17 inch offerings

I just received my 8662, it is fantastic and not heavy at all. I had an Asus F3Sa model and this feels very similiar, a little taller but not grossly so...
Honestly, I dont think you need to worry about the weight on many laptops unless you decide to get dual gpu cards in which case i believe the laptop becomes a lot heavier as they also need more weight for cooling factors as well. -

Check out the Asus N81Vp. It's an extremely powerful 14" notebook that might satisfy both your needs (portability & gaming). It has the ATI 4650.

What contributes to the 8662's weight?
