Im generally against the idea of coolers.
Whats the purpose of a laptop if you get to carry around your cooler aswell?
The best thing you can do is lift your back legs on the laptop 3-4cm and this will be perfect to lower temps with 2-3 degrees or more.

I dislike having more than a laptop and power brick on my desk.
Add a cooler and this means more cables (USB and/or another power brick for the cooler).

Also, you gotta clean this one too. And it can blow dust more easily inside your laptop. And it costs money (no matter how cheap it is).

Maybe get the Coolermaster U3 so you can position the fans.. Should help your temps, but ideally you'd find a solution to your heat problem before you should to buy a cooler

I use a notepal u3. Not just because it lowers my temps a bit, but because I love the typing angle

I am also wondering what is the best cooler stand for my P170EM. I've got a Notepal Cooler Master ergostand for now, It's a great stand, well build and the big 140mm fan is very silent. but there are 2 very anoying things about it. First it is a bit too small so I can't put the anti slip brackets. Second : it's only use 5v USB so it never shut down with the computer on sleep. So I definitly wonder if there is something better out there.

Fenryr, does you U3 hold your satori well?

hizzaah, fenryr423 use the same U3! It can lower your temps by up to 5C. But another little advantage is that even lowering the temps in can also lower your system noise)

It fits perfect. at the back there are two grey rubber grips and the back feet fit perfectly on it. I was able to get 1 fan under under each vent and placed the 3rd on the vents by the Vram

The U3 seems to be the consensus best cooler out there right now. But just to make sure you're aware it is really only usable on a desk. You can't use it on your lap.

If anyone knows of a good cooler that can be used on your lap I'd love to hear about it.

I was using the zalman nc-2000 for almost 3 years now and it's doing the job done perfectly. I remember when I had an asus g51 with gtx 260m which ran without a cooler more than 95 C!!
After time it's still quiet and lowering mi temps even on mi new 150em.
It's not small , but it's not as big as the u3 and i thinkk you can even put it on your lap.

Have an sf-19 as well.. It's pretty noisy on full blast though. It moves enough air that you can use it on you lap and not worry about choking it.. Actually makes my legs kinda cold lol.. Wear at least shorts if you've got any amount of leg hair lol, the fans are right at the bottom and will make your day unpleasant :p it's got 4 3-pin connectors on the inside so you can swap out for smaller fans if you wanted..

    +1 to the NotePal U3.

I bought an extra set of fans for $10 so that I now have 6 fans. I just got it so I haven't done any tests yet. I plan on putting 4 under the CPU/GPU row and the other one below near the battery and one on the other side to help push air up the angle of inclination the U3 gives. The other configuration I'm thinking of is putting one fan under each vent on the bottom of the laptop.

Not sure yet what the effects are at this point. These are all just "good ideas" in my head right now.

One mod I am considering is redoing the wiring so that I only use one USB port. I might splice the wires and put them in parallel so that it's 6 fans powered by 1 USB port. I have to double check if that's enough voltage though. We'll see. It's not that important. I have another USB port to spare, after all.

But to get back on topic, the U3 is super silent and the air it blows through is focused. The blades don't scatter the air too much, like how most nice low-profile fans are. I like it a lot.

I really don't understand why you would want to use a cooler. On my old laptop I had to use a cooler because I inherited it from my brother as it was damaged from his tour in afghanistan. I had it fixed so it worked, but it still overheats without a cooler under it very quickly. The cooler made it so difficult just to move the laptop from room to room, and to have a cooler under it AND on your lap is just out of the question. It makes it very hard to carry places which is the whole point of a laptop.

This machine needs no cooler. I gamed for about 3 hours yesterday and the air behind the fans was maybe a little warm. Maybe. I would really suggest just using it without a cooler.

It's true you don't need a cooler. I don't carry my cooler around with me. It stays home, in fact. Right now I'm typing on my laptop at work without. The reason why I bought a cooler is to keep temps stable when my laptop stays on for long periods of time. If I OC in the near future, I want the lowest temp I can get possible for the longevity of my stuff. So yeah you don't need it, but for $25 and for the bonuses you get with it, why not? The typing angle is awesome, too.

You don't need a cooler for these Clevo. If you think you need one, you should spend the money on improving your cooling. Personally I find them a real hassle and cumbersome to use. Bought one and it was a novelty for a few days and then never used it again.

How's the bottom side of the SF-19? Is it a sharp plastic or even aluminum? Is it rubberized? The reason I'm asking this is because my desk here is made of glass and my old cooler was pure aluminum and could easily scratch this surface.

As to how cumbersome a cooler is - I agree, it's less than a perfect solution, but a gaming laptop is a big beast that will mostly stay in one place. Its 'mobility' is just for convenience's sake, as it makes it easier to move apartments than a desktop, or perhaps lug it to a hotel once in a while, but that's about it. As it is, why not just plug it into something that will help keep it cooler while you're at it?

Here is a screenshot of the result from running the NotePal U3 with 6 fans...

That's the cropped image of the test to show the temp, load %, and time duration I ran the test.

Just to give you guys an idea, and I'm not lying (I gain nothing by doing so), running with just three, fans for 3-5 minutes, with the 3 fans directly below most of the vents gave me an average of about 88* C. In this screenshot, I ran the test for 23+ minutes (read: TWENTY-THREE!) with all 6 fans covering all of the vents towards the back. When I came back from dinner and the test was still running, it was rock steady at 85* C.

I remember telling Kevin (fenryr) that if I get even just 1-2* C drop in temp, I'd be delighted. Buying 3 extra fans for $10 and giving me 1-2* C drop would have been awesome enough for me. Instead I got this much more. :) I'll try running the test again for only 3-5 minutes so I can do an apples-to-apples comparison.

    EDIT: Here it is... http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/676551-effects-cooler-master-notepal-u3-w-6-fans.html

That's 3-5* C drop by adding 3 more fans. The temperature also rises very slowly and after the test it drops to the low 40s rapidly. All for $10! That beats redoing the paste if you ask me! :)
