i decided to get the 9850 but i can't afford the SLI, so im going only single video card. i also don't want to spend more money on a processor that is too fast since i am on a budget, just something thats plenty enough to accompany the 280M gtx well....... i just want to know if a 2.5 C2D is fast enough... or do i need to upgrade to a quad core processor? any help would be appreciated thanks!

A C2D at 2GHz is more than fast enough. We talked about this already in another thread before. I can't remember the link though.

The gain above anything over 2,2ghz is not noticable (less than 0,5fps). This doesnt include gta4 though since its very cpu reliant.

GTA4 is a ported game from console isnt it?
then it is much CPU dependant just like games running on emulators

and yes....2.0ghz is a nice spot

not to question you or to stear this topic in another direction but, if you cant afford the sli are there other reasons that you prefered the 9850 over the 5797? both have 280m's but the 5797 is a cheaper.

Anyway, the p8700 which is the std for these at most retailers should be ok with gaming, most games are more gpu than cpu dependant.

It mainly depends on the games requirements. (eg. RTS games likes using the CPU)

A 2.5ghz C2D should cut it for most games.

flipfire is right, it depends on how the game uses the hardware. Also the 280mgtx is a really powerful gpu, and you might regret getting something like a 2Ghz cpu in the long run. 2.5Ghz like flipfire said.

its because for the same specs the 9850 is only $200 more than the 5797. and you get a dual lamp screen + more space for air circulation inside the case. And im guessin there is future upgradability since it uses newer parts?
