After searching for months and fighting with my brothers, i finally pull the trigger on the 5790. Since our budget is quite limited, we couldn't get the 7950 :'(. I was wondering what AV and other enhancement program you guys would recommend on our 3 5790s. Also, tip and trick on how 2 ppl can take 3 laptops on a plane is appreciated ><"

We only got the basic spec
7300, 1g ram (+1 more when they arrive), 80gb hdd - -", and bla bla bla standard. Oh, 8700gt *white flag*.

Justin at Xotic pc has been very helpful though but somehow i can never reach any one on the phone, always get that "telephone sale department is close on" %D<--today date and that's everyday i call XD. I think they were hiding from me. Anyways, all suggestions are welcome. I think i made the right choice V_V

    Carl

Edit: My laptop in sig has been commandeered by my gf :-(

if you want freeware AVs, ad-adware,avast, and spybot search-and-destroy are very good programs...

if you're willing to pay...I would say mc-afee.

    off-topic:

congrats on your new NP5790s, they are truly amazing machines. My recommendation to you is the size of the Hard Drive. IMO, it's extremely small as you don't even have 80 gigs to start out with then minus another 8-10 gigs for the OS itself and you're already down to around 70 gigs...

Congrats on the new system. :)

After having a clean install of Windows, get these:

The programs that are a must (and free):
Firewall: Zone Alarm Free Version or Kerio Personal Firewall
Anti-Virus (freeware): avast! 4 Home Edition or BitDefender or AVG (only had an issue with Clevo M570U)
Anti-Virus (commercial): (never Norton and McAffee) NOD32 or F-Secure or Avira
    Adware/Malware Removers: Ad-Aware SE, Spybot, AVG Anti-Spyware
Web Browser: Mozilla Firefox 2 (w/ extensions: IEtab and Adblock)
Office Suite: OpenOffice (its the free alternative to MS Office 2003 Pro)
Media Player: Media Player Classic or VLC and/or WinAMP
Media Codecs: K-Lite Codec Pack, Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative (way better than installing the players, its the codecs that can play the video files on ANY media player).
DVD Backup software: RipIt4Me (requires to have DVD Decrypter and DVDShrink.. both are free)
    Image Viewer: IrfanView
    Image Editor: GIMPshop or Paint.NET
File Archiver/Zip Utility: 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR (shareware though)

    Other Utilities (amazing and freeware):
    Video Conversion Program: "Super"
Video Editing Software: VirtualDub (w/ vdfilters)
    Audio Editing Software: Audacity
CD/DVD Burning Software: CDBurnerXP Pro or Nero (shareware... but most systems come with full OEM version)
    Registry Cleaner: EasyCleaner
    Trojan Scanner/Remover: AVG Anti-Spyware (ewido)
Rootkit Scanner: Panda Anti-Rootkit or BlackLight
    Email Client: Mozilla Thunderbird
    FTP Client: FileZilla or SmartFTP
    BitTorrent Client: Azureus or uTorrent
Download Manager: Star Downloader or Free Download Manager
    HTML Editor: NVU / KompoZer
    Sticky Notes Utility: ATnotes

I got much more.... tell me if you want more freeware. I have collected and tried out thousands of programs.
And you know me, I like bang for the buck... even if its free... it has to be good. :)

Remember these things to have your notebook be healthy for years:

    1) Battery: to maintain the longevity of any rechargeable battery
    - you must NEVER overcharge it [especially for long durations of time] by keeping it plugged into AC
    - when it reaches 100% you should unplug it and let it discharge to 5-15%, then plug it back to power
    - OR you can just charge it to 50%+ and remove the battery and store in cool place [remember to use it occasionally to charge and discharge it].

2.) Heat: to prevent a healthy notebook from overheating
    - ALWAYS use the notebook on a hard & flat surface
    - RECOMMENDED to be used on a notebook cooler... namely the Zalman ZM-NC1000
    - check your fans underneath occasionally (at least once a month) for any dust clogs [clean them out with Q-tips and air cans/compressors]
    - ALWAYS monitor the temps (CPU, GPU, HDD, etc..) to watch for fluctuations, which would indicate overheating

By doing these simple things, your entire system will easily last for more than 3 years.

    Hey Gophn,
I just got my new 2090 and I found this thread very very helpful. Thank you very much for your help!

Edit: How good is Open Office? The only problem I think I would have with it is if I tried to use a file on a computer that has MS Word.

gophn has these posts in word documents on his desktop, and he copy/pastes as required :)

    3 laptops + 3 bags + 2 people + plane = 3 laptops & 2 people on a plane.

and dont feel insecure with Xotic...i got my 9260 from them this week, and LOVE it!

OpenOffice is fully compatible with MS Office programs.

Just need to make sure to save the document as MS Word file type. thats all.

On the hard drive note, we have an old home desktop with almost 1tb to dump crap on V_V because we dump all the share music, movies, and other stuff onto our server at home =D

Do you think they would say anything if i have a laptop in a lappy bag and carry another one in my backpack?

probably not..you can always just say that you are bringing it to your brother since he left it at home...?

i doubt it will be an issue.
