wanting you to fax them your personal information, specifically both your credit card number and its security code, for repairs? Does that seem like a safe business practice? What is done to ensure that a random person doesn't find it later on? Is it shredded? Burned?! Just seems very unsafe and risky.

Has anyone else had experience with this before?

Do you need to pay $15 for shipping of the fax?

I'm in the process of getting a new replacement keyboard for my system. I'll let you know if they ask me to fax that info over. I've been burned by legit companies having unsecure sites when I purchased from them, so there is no way I am going to just hand over credit card info via fax that is not encrypted and anyone can use.

I'd call the credit card company and ask for a "one use" numbers in a case like this. The CC company generates a unique CC number and security code that is tied to your usual CC account and can only be used once. Once it's used it's automatically deactivated and removed from your account so it can't be abused.

I'm no expert on the subject but I'd say fax is as safe as giving your number out over the phone, which many companies do, or even via email/web.

That's why I have an "online purchases" credit card with a max limit of 500.

i would say fax is insane.

FAx machine can be passed by a number of employess all day long.

You have no control over the fax being in a secure location. I refuse to give cc on phone or fax anything except a secure server that is hooked to a gateway.

Sager have no reason for this and I have always said sagers credit card practices are very dubious. Hwy no instant charge when you order an item. They even just capture your cc on the sager site so hackers can easily retrieve it from the database.

Refuse and fedex them the money or take up that one time charge deal

better still Paypal do they accept paypal ?

    Wow! Deja Vu!

Here's what I told them back in Feb when I ordered my 8690 by mail.

    "Mr. XXXXX;

Just send the computer to my billing address instead of the deployed shipping address. I will have someone there mail it to me.

My credit card statements are sent electronically. I have included a statement I viewed online this morning (Afghan time).

I will not fill out the drop ship authorization form, giving all the same personally identifiable information and full credit card details including security code, that I have already entered on your website (which I assume was secure), and then email it back to you unencrypted. I have no idea where this form with all this sensitive information would end up.

As for photocopying my government ID:
Please tell your accounting department that it is a violation under Federal Law to photo copy a government ID except for Military Personnel when using the ID as a medical insurance card.

Title 18, US Code Part I, Chapter 33, Section 701

"Whoever manufactures, sells, or possesses any badge,
identification card, or other insignia, of the design prescribed by
the head of any department or agency of the United States for use
by any officer or employee thereof, or any colorable imitation
thereof, or photographs, prints, or in any other manner makes or
executes any engraving, photograph, print, or impression in the
likeness of any such badge, identification card, or other insignia,
or any colorable imitation thereof, except as authorized under
regulations made pursuant to law, shall be fined under this title
or imprisoned not more than six months, or both."

This can be found here: 18 U.S.C. § 701 : US Code - Section 701: Official badges, identification cards, other insignia

I would suggest you look into using something like the MasterCard SecureCode on your website to prevent this sort of issue in the future.

So please just send the laptop to my billing address."

End of excerpted text from email.

So they still haven't changed the way they do business and haven't adopted SecureCode (for Mastercard) or any other method of ensuring the transaction is legit.

    Fax machines?

    Seriously?

    S.

Looks like I only have to send ID when purchasing over $200, but between the archaic purchasing system and the fact it's going to cost me $70 for a keyboard (????) I'll live with the broken key that I don't use any ways.

If you can pop the keyboard out, check the part number. I got a replacemet keyboard on eBay for ~$20 shipped when it would have cost $50 from Sager. Just search title and description on eBay for the part number of the keyboard.
