I never heard of Sager or Clevo before until I came to NBR. Now I'm extremely impressed by what they offer. Overall, I'm looking for a gaming laptop, prefferable one that has an 8800 GPU in it and a 17" screen.

Is there a difference between Sager and Clevo models with 8800's in them? Are they the same chasis and guts, just different label?

What's the best models that are able to have an 8800GPU?

What's the consensus on the Sager NP5793? I priced it out to under $2500 with a T9300 2.5ghz, 8800, 2gig ram, 160BG 7200 HDD. This model seemed to stand out of the crowd and I'm leaning towards it.

Is it best to order direct from them? Or Resellers?

PS---The NP9262 looks like it features straight up Desktop parts like the E6850, I'm guessing this model runs hot as hell.

Basically, the same chassis and guts, just different labels. The Sagers are Clevo barebones that are purchased by Sager, customized, and sold as Sagers (in a very small nutshell).

The Clevo D901C/Sager 9262 - in addition to being able to run 2 8800Ms in SLi, it uses a desktop processor and, from all reports, runs cool as a cucumber.

The consensus is that it's a good system (there're lots of threads on that system here), but that it can be a mite loud for some (others aren't bothered, so it's a very subjective thing).

Better to order from one of the resellers, you get better pricing (from all appearances, Sager intentionally will not compete against its own resellers on price - they seem to know who butters their bread :D ), probably better customer service (the resellers are smaller, and seem to be more individually attentive) - ultimately, however, technical support frequently goes back to Sager, and you usually get more varied and better warranty options from the resellers.

thanks for the reply. The 9262 is pretty much what I already have in my home built desktop.(for a fraction of the price of course). I think I'm gonna bite on the 5793. I'm guessing this model consumes less power due to it's portable parts vs desktop components.

Yes. That is correct. And I would recommend buying through www.XoticPC.com as they give a 3% cash discount on wire transfers, and an extended 3 year warranty. :) Not to mention they're very reputable ;) You can also apply for student or military discount (50% off on non-international shipping) if it applies to you. :) I too just placed my order for a similar config as yours, and their hospitality and support is truly one of a kind! :)

Just to be fair (sorry, Justin  ), so do a number of the other resellers.

Basically, the discount represents the amount the reseller would have had to pay to the credit card company for processing a credit card transaction, so they basically net the same (although it probably has some minor marginal rate tax implications since a discount reduces gross receipts - and thus gross income - whereas a credit card processing fee represents a business expense that is taken as a deduction but doesn't reduce gross receipts - just in case you wanted to learn another useless bit of trivia today :D ).

yeah, I'm familiar with that. A lot of gas stations do that, give you a marginal discount per gallon for using cash and not credit.

Actually, this notebook is probably the coolest notebook on the market.

I have dealt with many notebooks over the years and this notebook's thermal design is second to none.

It is the fastest and the coolest... no doubt.

Finally, its the last notebook that I can think of that would overheat.

What do they do with the smaller space of the notebook to keep it from getting hot? Hell, Desktops with those same parts are loud and get hot unless you run some decent fans or have water cooling. I'm really curious as to how they keep the noise and heat down. Is there a thermal pad of some sort in the chassis?

look at the reviews, they have shots of the inside of the notebook.

with four large diameter fans, and large copperheatsink/pipes... this system has the lowest chance of overheating.

And Clevo notebooks are one of the only ones out there that have a Fan Toggle (Fn+1) feature to switch all fans to max speed or auto speed (without having to deal with software level fan controls.

cool, I think I'm gonna order a Sager, you guys have sold me with those reviews. Now, I'm still fighting with Alienware on getting my restocking fee back, even though the system was never built. Go figure.
