What hardware upgrades will be available over the next few months that are not yet listed in most resellers customization pages for the Clevo M570RU/Sager NP5790?
I plan on getting one but I think i might wait till they offer dx10 cards at for example xoticpc.com or powernotebooks.com.
Within the next few months and as far as the end of this year what hardware upgrades should be available in the configuration?
I know the fingerprint reader will be available and the white trim, but what other things dealing with processors, memory, HDD, and graphics cards most likely be available and is there a time line for this? When approximately will the changes be seen on the configuration?
-
They will offer the Geforce GO 8700, however, benchmarks put the 7950GTX 20-30% above the 8700. You might end up getting better performance on directX applications, but personally, I would wait for something like the 8800 to come out and then get the upgrade GPU.
As for the rest, I cant tell but the CPU, RAM, HDD depends on where u buy the laptop from. RJTech offers it barebone, that might be your best bet. -
Well this notebook can have the following upgrades:
- Chassis: white trim option in about a month or so
- CPU: Socket P for new Santa Rosa platform Core 2 Duo's (will soon have Core 2 Extreme X7800/7900)
- RAM: tops out at 4gigs DDR2
- HDD: new SATA 2.5" HDD's are coming out every month, 300GB drives are highest capacity at the moment.
- Optical Drive: standard slot that can house HD-DVD and Blu-Ray drives as well
-- 2nd HDD in optical bay (rumored that it might be possible, not confirmed)
- Videocard: (using standardized MXM) currently has two options for ordering
-- Nvidia 7950GTX... still king of mobile videocards
-- Nvidia 8700M GT... best mobile DX10 videocard (slightly slower than 7950GTX)
-- Nvidia 8800M (out in Winter) -
so i will be able to stick a penryn in when they come out this time next yr? also, from experience, what do you think the pricing on the 8800 will be? 100 more than the 7950gtx, or even more? -
Socket P does stand for PENRYN.
I will not speculate too much on the 8800M prices... they videocards usually go for more than $500 usually.
Most of the time, Sager and other resellers/vendor have upgrade programs for the videocard to save you some money when a new videocard comes out and a customer want to upgrade to it.
The prices are a bit painful even for the upgrade programs... I remember when I got my 7800GTX and the 7900GTX came out within a couple of months after... the cost to upgrade was around $300.... ouch.. thats the premium for the newest stuff available I guess.
So if you can wait, I would get the 8800M in Winter when it gets released and is included in the price of the notebook.
If you cannot wait, the 7950GTX is still king, and should easily last for many years to come... and down the line you can still upgrade the videocard if you want. -
Another videocard that should be available for the 570RU in the near future (mid to late September from what I've been told) is the nVidia Quadro FX 3500M (specialized 3D/CAD application GPU).
-
Oh yea, I forgot about that card... but its mainly for DCC/3D work. Since the typical consumer would not be able to pay an extra $500 over the price of the 7950GTX to get the Quadro 3500M.
-
Would be lovely if they slapped an eSATA connection in the back in place of the mostly useless serial port.
-
Not useless for a lot of proffesionals..
-
Wait...doesn't the 5790 already have Santa Rosa with the 800 MHZ fsb? Or does the Santa Rosa still have the 665?
-
I heard on Maximum PC that there will be a far better processor after penryn. Could this laptop support that as well? OR is it limited to the Penryn Family. Also wondering when is this penryn processor coming out for the mobile market.
-
Well, after the first batch of Penryn processors, we're going quad core. Sounds like a big improvement to me. Also, it will almost definitely be an entirely different socket. Look up Nehalem for what I believe to be the equivalent desktop processor.

The Santa Rosa platform will be refreshed in Q1 2008 with the Penryn Core 2 Duo processors, which are detailed here:
http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=3837
That will be it for Santa Rosa. Intel will release Montevina in Q2 2008 to replace Santa Rosa. -
Too bad technology moves so damn fast... it's hard to keep up without going broke!

So according to this thread and others I have read, people are saying the sager 5790 will be upgradeable to the 8800 when it comes out. I am just wondering where people get this info? The mobile 8800 still seems like speculation with people throwing out all kinds of thoughts of when and if it will be released. So how do we know it will be the right mxm socket and fit into these sager's. I am in the same boat as a lot of people. I want to buy now, but want to upgrade in the future. So I just want to check on the reliability of the info?
On a side note . does sager have a sli notebook that is still 17", and intel based besides the 9260 that will not sterilize me if i put it on my lap? -
8800M's (not official model name) according to Nvidia's press releases are in heavy development.
The first of its high-end DX10 line is the new 8700M GT.
The 8800M (or whatever it will be called) is scheduled to be released this Winter. -

If you plan on using a 17" laptop like the NP5790 on your lap then it is highly recommended that you use a cooling pad as a medium between the machine and you. That way you don't get warm and the notebook is able to stay cool. Even a board/tray would work. I am not sure if the commonly recommended Zalman NC-1000 cooler works on laptops but the Targus Chillmat sure does. I reviewed it in the cooling guide.
There's a reason laptops are now called notebooks. -
The newer ones, not so much. -
I agree... my cousin's 17" XPS can sit on my lap all night running games and your legs only get a little warm after a while.
Back to my original question. Thanks for clarifying that the 8800 is in the works for the mobile version. But how about the second part of my question. What are the thoughts that it will definitely use the same MXM slot as the sager and be upgradeable? -

Clevo notebooks to my knowledge use a modified (proprietary) version of MXM. There is no way to tell right now whether or not the NP5790 will work with a card that doesn't exist. Believe me, the resellers or anyone who knew the answer to that question would have posted it already. I'm just as eager to see if the 8800M will work as the next guy . . . but we simply do not have this information available. There is no way to tell, and speculation doesn't help.
-
the thing we DO know, is that compatibility would increase sales on the m570ru and on the 8800 also...
though, this is up to nvidia i guess?
Where is the Clevo 570RU / Sager np5790 going in the near future?
