Hello all,
Was just wondering if anyone here on the forum's has a reference as to where I can buy just the 480M to throw in my 9280.
Thanks in advance.

I have found only one place so far that sells the GTX 480M as an upgrade part, and that is rjtech.com and for a bargain of... $940. I am going to keep searching for other places to buy the video card during my down time at work, as I have a D900F I want to upgrade...
-
lol omg. Good find though.
I would never pay that much for this card. I am thinking $400.00 tops.
I have two EVGA SuperClocked 470's under water and I got both of them for under $650.00.
For anyone else who has a reference for where to buy the 480M, post up! -
well mobile gpu is always more expensive compared to the desktop cousin. just let it a few months on the road, should be have better pricing for it, i hope

I think the least expensive this card will be for a while is $889.00. Sorry about that.

Ridiculous pricing.

it sucks that all the desktop cards of the same model number as the mobile are always faster. they should just alternate numbers, use all the odds for mobile series and have them actually the same as the next number down.
so we would be talking about a gtx 580 and it would have the same clocks and pipelines as the gtx 480 which would only be a desktop card. it could be so much easier.
ah well. -

The best way to show Nvidia their pricing is ridiculous is to not buy their product. Hopefully this card has absolutely miserable sales and Nvidia is forced to price it in a realistic price bracket.

why not get a 5870 for like, what 200-300 bucks?

With D900f heatsink, the 480M is $940 on RJtech. The 5870 is only $350, and the 285M is $400.
Obviously, the 480M is no where near worth its value purchased alone. However, if you build your own NP8850 (barebones is $1600), you could end up with a 920XM machine for ~$2300. 480M and 920XM has already gotten 17700 in 3dmark06, and the temperature on the GPU is only around 70C. The 480M has a lot of potential, but there's a price to pay for bleeding edge technology. The enthusiasts who wish to put together their own machine and buy discounted components win out, as always -

Whoa. $940 is nuts. I think $600 would have been fair enough. Yeah yeah, principle of decreasing returns, but 2.5 times the price for 30% (sometimes?) better performance is crazy.
-
Yeah the price is not very attractive on its own....
At least when you buy the W880CU you are also getting USB 3.0, the bigger PSU and better cooling.... While those things are nothing amazing individually, combined it makes it a little easier to swallow then just getting a new GPU for $600 more then the ATI card... -
Maybe people believe that ..... "Woah $950 for a GPU, it must be powerful".
-
If your spending $950.00 on a mobile GPU hopefully you would take the time to do some research....
Then again some people dont care and are willing to spend what ever it takes for the best performance.... In the desktop world this is actually normal....
I know i am tempted to grab the W880CU even though i know its not going to be much if at all faster then my M15x... I love new technology though...

Well, the heatsink is full copper, so it's gonna be quite expensive (At least I was charged $100 for the heatsink replacement), so consider that better cooling on 8850 as some hefty price as well.

Just called Sager because I was bored.
They sell the 480M for $890.00 with the Heat sink and thermal pads.
Best price I have found so far. Just wanted to share the results with everyone. -
I wish I could get 480M SLI for my machine and the cost was a total of say $800 for both..yeah if wishes were horses or something like that right? I hate ATi drivers with a passion. The nVidia premium may just be worth it for their stellar driver quality alone. I can't wait until AW's next iteration of M17x/M18x with an nVidia SLI configuration, I'll never look back.
-
Better drivers worth the $950 price tag? (more heat and power consumption as a bonus serious). SLI cost more than most notebook.

My D900F is too old to upgrade to the GTX 480M, the power supply is too old. I guess it needs more AMPs or something.
How ever it seems my D900F will take the AMD alternative card... but I also have never liked the AMD/ATI Radeon drivers. I have gone through a few systems that came with Radeon mobility graphics and never liked its software.
If my D900F some how could be upgraded to the GTX 480M, I may have been willing to save up to the $940 or so to do it. A price tag like that I would not have impulse bought it when it came out, but it would have been nagging at my brain until I could afford it.
I may have to just sell my current system and buy a newer one down the road to go GTX 480M. -
Hopefuly prices will go down by autumn, (when i'm gonna buy my laptop), and if i'm lucky i'll end up with the 480m, and if not, by then, 460m should be out, and still bring enough performance for my needs. Even, if it's on the level of a 285m, i'd prefer it over the m5870 simply because nvidia always knew how to make their drivers. And if the price is right i might end up with a 460m sli inside the x7200, because SLI scales well these days, and as i said before, nvidia knows how to make it's drivers. -
I agree, Drivers can make or break a game. Regarding the laptop in my sig, I once installed an ATI 5870 in to it and with the latest ATI Drivers, I had stuttering in some games. In GTA IV, I had to lower all of my settings to get anywhere near the performance that I got when I was using the GTX 285M. I assume that was also Driver related.
I don't think many will buy the 480M on its own but I think new laptop owners may well go for it simply due to Nvidia's Drivers reputation. If I got a new laptop, I would probably go for the 460M.
Where to Buy the 480M?
