I want to upgrade my i7-3610 to either a 3720qm or 3820qm. I've found that I really enjoy gaming via emulation, which is very CPU intensive.

Where do people typically buy CPUs? I've searched quite a bit online, and really can't find any notable chains (i.e. Bestbuy) that carry Ivy Bridge mobile CPUs. I also went on eBay and saw that many sellers offer OEM and ES versions for better prices. I'm wondering if these are safe.

Also, any chance Sager would sell me a new CPU at a discounted price if I sent in my old one?

    Thanks!

I bought it about 2 months ago. So I'm wondering if Sager (or XoticPC) could help me out at all if I traded in my 3610qm (I doubt it).

Are these ES and OEM versions safe to purchase? I'm a little nervous about buying one. The cheapest I found a 3820qm (retail) online is for around $500 (ouch). But I think you get a 2 or 3 year warranty, so I would at least have peace of mind with that. So I imagine a retail 3720qm would be around $350-$400.

CPUs rarely fail, it's not a big risk.

So if the cpu arrives working then you should be ok, if not then return it straight away.

Don't get ES. Get the OEM version, pay the extra for it.

As for gaming with an emulator, just buy a console... A $2500 laptop to emulate a $150 console. Brilliant...

ES are engineering samples so I'd stay away from those, OEM are fine though they are the same thing as the Retail versions without heatsinks or fans, just the CPU. You can PM me and we can look into getting one for you.

Emulating isn't the only thing I'm doing on my laptop, and I want to do it so I can play enhanced versions of the games. Have you ever played Xenoblade Chronicles? It's a fantastic game, but the graphics on the Wii (especially on a 52" 1080p LCD) are horrible. On the PC via emulation, you can upscale it into HD and play with texture mods to make the game look remarkable. There are a number of other games I'd like to do this for, which is why I'm looking into upgrading my CPU.

ebay is good, i would avoid ES or QS cpu's as they run a fair bit hotter (and thus also slower) than OEM chips
