    Hello

I posted this same question a long time ago and I apologize for that but I couldnt find the post...

Anyways I was wondering if someone can send me some links on a good bluray burner that will fit snug into the Np8170? I want to replace the DVD Drive I have with a bluray...Thanks!

PS Anyone know how often is it good to change the thermal compound on the laptop?

Any slim laptop size SATA burner will work, however I think the Panasonic UJ-240 is the best deal for features and price. You can find them for a steal on eBay and if you look you can find HP branded ones cheap. I just picked up an HP UJ-240 burner for $65 and it works like a champ. That is a steal if I have ever seen one! I have an 8150 but I know they will work 8170.

Others have answered your BluRay question, but for thermal paste- it depends on your usage.

If you don't remove the heatsink and have moderate usage, you're looking at years of use. (More years than you'll probably own the laptop) If you remove your heatsink for any reason though, it's recommended you replace the grease as it won't form the same bond otherwise.

That said, check your temps and if you see them running dramatically higher, consider doing a repaste anyway.

I had an LG burner I took from an external USB drive and it was very noisy seeking etc in my Eurocom Racer. I put in a Sony Blu ray reader/DVD burner and it was quiet. I ordered one of these Panasonics though because I have one in my Toshiba and its great. Thanks for the link Larry@ rep 2 u

I just recently purchased a used NP8150 that is only 4 months old. I removed the heatsinks and cooling blades. They were caked with dust and I redid the thermal paste. I think for no other reason then getting dust off the cooling blades it may not be a bad idea every 6 months or so. No scientific approach to that just good cooling.

Of course, cleaning out the dust is another matter entirely. You should do this every 3-6 months depending on your environment. Repasting isn't necessary though, as you should be able to clean the heatsink and fans without removing the heatsink itself.

If you keep your laptop in as bedroom there is a lot more dust from the bedsheets than any other room in the house.

Also if you live in a desert, like Las Vegas it can be dusty at times... :)

Yes it is a very good habit to get into...that is cleaning the dust off your componets at least twice a year.
