Hey guys, I'm looking to buy my son a Clevo for his graduation present. I'm not really a tech guy, so I need you guys to help me out. Which laptop is best for him?

    Hi,

That is one lucky son. :) But before we can assist you, you are going to have to provide more details. What are the purposes of his laptop (I'm assuming gaming)? How mobile does it need to be? What is your budget?

    The budget is about $1,500

Hmm, you have a couple of options within that budget. The main question is, do you have an idea of how mobile he is going to be with it? Will he be taking it to classes a lot, or will it just be a "desk" laptop?

He will be taking it around campus, he is going to go into designing, so he will be using it a lot at sever locations, I think.

In that case, I'd suggest taking a look at the P151HM1 or the P150HM.

if its for graduation i would wait if the next models are coming out soon that will have next gen tech like optimus which will yield better battery life.

Thanks! I was looking at those two, and from the pictures, they look identical. Why is one so much more expensive than the other?

The two main differences are the exterior finish and the GPUs available to both models. The P150HM supports better GPUs due to its larger power brick and has a rubberized finish. The P151HM1 has a plastic finish.

I also would suggest getting it after he graduates, or at least around the same time he's doing it (assuming the next models have come out by then). If he's going into designing, he may need more CPU power than GPU, though the 2760QM (and its successor) should be more than enough power for a low enough price point. The 15 inch models would be perfect for carrying around, I'm sure.

I would also recommend the 6990M but would highly recommend spending a little bit extra for the performance increase from a 2760QM rather than a 2670QM it should be a minor cost increase for a good boost when running all 4 cores. Either model P150HM or P170HM with the HM67 chipset are top notch.

    2670QM - 2.2ghz - 3.1ghz
    2760QM - 2.4ghz - 3.5ghz

If mobility is high on his list, the P150 runs very close to 7lbs and the NP5165 runs slightly over 5 1/2lbs and that's a bid deal if he's lugging a laptop all the way. One thing everyone forgets is the size/weight of the power brick. The P150 has a 180w versus the 135w power brick of the NP5165 - big diff.

You can max out the NP5165 with a i7-2760QM and GTX555m. So for the combination of moderate gaming performance, a 4 hour battery life in a light(ish) package - the P150 models don't even come close.

edit: it comes under your price point by a fair amount too

Hmmm, if he is not all that techy I would get an M14x for him instead, that is if you decide to go with the NP5165 model. If you want the ultimate gaming and workload beast then I would go with the NP8150 with the 6990m, and at least the i7 2670. That combination can play Battlefield 3 at very close to, if not maxed settings. Beyond that, upgrade the thermal paste because it is easier than doing it yourself and they will do it properly, and make sure you know if he likes matte screens or glossy screens better. Malibal does not offer standard matte screens, but XoticPC does. You can't afford a 95% color improved screen in that budget. In my opinion there is really no point to going with the 8130 especially since you can't upgrade the graphics card when you order. Plus the NP8150 is just more comfortable looking with the rubber finish. I am only 17 myself, but don't take that as me being not knowing what I am talking about. I think my parents will help me afford a Clevo when I graduate as well. Of course for the $1800+ machine I have my eye on, I need to help at lease somewhat ;)

The M14x has more of a "wow thanks dad!" effect to it and it is also a bit more portable than the NP8150, although it is heavier than the NP5165 by a bit. If you'd rather give him something that does more of everything where it counts, go with the NP8150.

let me correct our friend Septro! Its GT 555M not GTX and that a BS card for gaming. if its not a need right away, wait 3 months, get it with the next gen graphics and cpu for probably the same price! :)

Misprint on my end but don't preach to me about gaming when I'm playing just fine on my laptop for the games I need.

If you want to compare e-peens I can post my build log of my triple-sli GTX580 water-cooled desktop. That's where I play my games and actually care about visual looks. I want a laptop I can actually carry and last more than an hour with a battery.
