Most resellers offer a standard 3 year labor/ 1 year parts warranty. Did anyone add on a the second or third year? Why?

I'm considering adding on a second year- since my American Express card already adds a year, I'm looking at 4 yrs/ 3 yrs if I do (4 yrs/ 2 yrs is my default).

Any thoughts? Is 2 years parts probably enough, or will 3 years do much? My XPS m1530 had a 3 year warranty and I really never needed to take advantage of it other than for a $5 bluetooth module replacement. (I did have them replace all the guts, but my warranty was/is ending and it seemed worthwhile to cut down on overheating. I probably could have just repasted the CPU and GPU, but I digress..)

I got 3 year parts and labor. For 150 the piece of mind is worth it. I don't plan on buying a new computer for a while so its worth it in my circumstance.

I went with the 3/1, Visa is making it 3/2 + some accident protection. I haven't done a thing under my 3/3 on my XPS (did the two fixes I needed myself) and I'm debating calling them up for a bunch of stuff, especially since the finger print reader doesn't work at all.

What I'm worried about is getting a bad 8600 GT when I've had a solid one for 3 years...

I've had a long running history of skimping on warranties and not having it come back to bite me in the butt. Maybe I'm due to get screwed, but I hate paying for insurance, which is essentially what a warranty is. I get some weird personal satisfaction out of confidently refusing the extra warranty at the checkout counter at Best Buy.

On the other hand, my Dad has always maxed the warranties on his stuff because he had a house full of kids and things mysteriously broke all the time. I'm sure he never came out even or on top though.

I'm just too lazy to send it back or even take a day off for a tech to come visit me (costs more than the repair...) So I usually just repair things myself if I can... Too lazy to return etc anyway, and if it breaks after 2.5 years and its a part that costs more to fix than I think is worth fixing I'll probably just upgrade...

This is true, in this case the warranty isn't as nice as the one we both had on our XPS's (3 years/ 3 years on site). I don't think I'd want to ship my laptop back for repairs if it's avoidable. Considering how easy the Sagers are to do end user modifications to, I imagine repairs are easier than most as well. I may just stick with my 4/2 plan through my credit card.
