Hi, im planning on buying a sager 5796 very soon and was wondering which was the best combination out of these 3 setups for cpu, hard drive & ram for performance in gaming:

    (Initial Setup Idea)
    P8600 2.4ghz 3mb cache
    2GB ram
320GB SATA II 5400RPM (heard it performs the same as 7200RPM 200GB HD)

    Setup 2:
    P8400 2.26ghz 3mb cache
    4GB ram
    100GB 7200 RPM

    Setup 3:
    P9500 2.53ghz 6mb cache
    2GB ram
160 GB 5400 RPM (would consider upgrading to 100 GB 7200 if it makes a big diff)

thanks alot for your time and help.

Are you trying to stay under a certain price point?

    Why not :

P8400 2.26ghz 3mb cache --- more than enough for today's and near future games
2GB ram --- get one SODIMM, it's enough for now and you'll be able to upgrade in the future
320GB 5400 RPM --- you're spot on, this one has comparable performance with the 200GB 7200 RPM

What OS are you considering? If it is Vista then I would recommend your setup number 2 but with the 320GB 5,400 RPM hard drive.

As has been discussed elsewhere the processor upgrades are of little importance for most applications including gaming. 4GB memory will give you the best bang for the buck, and you will want to get a SATA II hard drive and the 320GB is the cheapest one, with approximately equal performance to the 200GB 7,200 RPM drive.

which videocard did you plan on getting? This obviously will affect your gaming the most. The 9800m GTX is considerably more expensive and doesnt look to be all that more powerful than a 9800m GT according to notebookcheck.com. Although we wont know how they perform on a 5796 for a while.

    im going for the 9800GT..

as for ram the 2GB one SODIMM sounds like a good idea with the 320GB HD.. is it easy to upgrade the ram?

im going for a dual-OS boot setup with XP and getting vista later, putting em as options on startup just to get the best out of DX10 with vista + future drivers.

and yeah im trying to stay just under/a little over 2000$

That sounds like a good plan :)

Yes, it is easy to install the RAM.

(You could also try to squeeze in the 320 GB 7200 RPM, it's very fast :) )
