I made a post about this in the owners sub forum but got the advice to post it here instead.

NZXT CRYO all the way.
Study, Cold, Solid, Reliable, and a perfect fit for the P170HM -

I would recommend the CoolerMaster SF-19 as well
the NZXT is solid.

Both the SF-19 and the NZXT looks really thick and heavy, and not very lap friendly at all. Do you guys really use these on your lap?
I'm looking for something I can take with me while traveling and to use in my bed and lap. If I have to sacrifice better cooling for movability, I would chose movability. -

Um, this is not a laptop. It's a notebook. A powerful one at that.
But if you must, look for a lapdesk to accompany you.

NZXT's advantage is that you can fold it in case you are on the go. You can put it in a big backpack.

I've used the NZXT Cryo,
unusable on the lap, especially with foldings and sharp edges.
I haven't used the SF-19, so those who use it may have to chime in.
But for lap use, the NZXT is a no-go. -

For lap-use, no cooler is a go. Use a lapdesk, but it's not portable. So you might as well carry like a flat piece of cardboard big enough to hold your notebook, and put it in between your legs and the underside of the notebook.
Mr. Mysterious -
I'm well aware that this is a powerful notebook, however I still want to be able to just lay down in my bed and watch a movie on it every once and a while. I won't be playing any games, or using any high resource programs when using it on my lap/ in bed.
From what I have gathered by your replies it seems like I should be looking for a lap desk then,so I'll look around for some good ones.
Doesn't anyone here ever use their P170HM to watch movies on your lap? If you do, please tell me what you use between your notebook and your lap.
If you have any experience from the Belkin or the LapAir I mentioned in my 1st post please give me your opinion on those. -

You don't need a cooler, especially if you are never gaming. These laptops cool very good, especially the model you have.
-
I just ordered a P170HM from xoticpc and really am hoping this laptop runs cool as mentioned on this thread. My current laptop is almost gives first degree burns and is impossible to have on my lap when gaming.
I actually started using a record cover as sort of a lap pad. I know most people dont have records anymore but it works. -

I do not think you will burn your body or hands. Of course while gaming you should have it on a flat hard surface so that the fans and vents can do their job.

NZXT cryo LX modded with Delta fans ftw

I wrote a review in the summer when I picked up a NP8170 and bought a cooler for it from Cool Master I believe.

Have a look, it's quite light and very good at cooling. -
Try the following:
1. Find CPU/GPU temp monitoring software
2. Place computer on desk/table. Power up.. start temp monitoring software... note your "no load" temps
3. Start doing stuff you'd do in bed... start a movie, surf the web... etc
4. Take note of temps... "under load"
You'll find that your temps only went up a degree or two or maybe even three. If that's the case.. all you really need is a hard flat surface for your laptop to sit on.
The goal of a lapdesk is twofold...
1. Keep heat off your crotch...
2. Don't let your crotch block the bottom vents.
Anything that is flat and hard will function as a lapdesk, like some shelving or a hardback coffeetable book. Most of the time you can find something to use wherever you go. If you're set on having something in your bag at all times....
Get a piece of 1/4" acrylic/plexiglass cut at your local hardware store to fit your laptop.. it'd be light and transportable. If you're going to use it in bed or on your lap.. just place a pillow under the plexi/acrylic sheet and it'd be just as useful as a lapdesk and much more portable.
You can also raise the rear of the laptop a little to give more clearance for the bottom vents... I use 2 large binderclips and just place the back of the laptop on them.
And then.. Finges notices the date of the original posting... -
I use Notepal U3.
I don't think there's any portable coolers really. The portable ones I have seen barely cools the laptop.
Which notebook cooler for P170HM?
