Though the laptop lives upto its expectations and even out does its self especially in the cooling of processor (peaked at 55c) and GPU (peaked at 72c) after intense gaming here are the 2 problems that are really bothering me.
My sys config
cpu - p8600, gpu - 9800gt, 320gb 5400rpm HDD, WSXGA
1. The HDD idles at around 50-55c and i have seen peak temps of around 69 after about an hr of intense gaming.
I have tried this fix but did no good at all. Except i have seen a very brief time of a min of 35c before it quickly got upto 50c. This worries me a lot as i dont want to loose my valuble data (mostly personal pics and documents) in any case.
2. The really annoying low intesity high pitched whining noise that seems to come from the cpu. It is very irritating especially in a very quite environment like a library. It reduces a bit when (to about 30%) when in silent mode.
Again i have tried turning on/off both bluetooth and wifi but they were of no use. The noise is still the same even when i set it my comp to high performance mode (comes default in vista) as suggested by some users here. Also i tried the rm clock but the c4 power saver mode is diabled in my setup for some reason hence it too doesnt work.
Also when i touch my finger print scanner/ the silver line above the scanner in the touch pad i feel a small electrical shock when the adapter is plugged in! This is definitely not a grounding problem as i have tried in 10 different power ports all of which are properly grounded. Its fine when it is running on batter.
I tried writing to powernotebook (my reseller) for support but they dont seem to respond at all!
I would be really happy to sort these thing out before actually damaging my other wise perfect notebook.

your HDD is defective, and have you tried calling powernotebook?
-
if your hard drive goes above 65c then you need to turn your computer off as this is a critical temperature. contact your seller.
run HD tune first and then go to the eror scan page and run that test. finally post the image on here. -
Is there any wrong with this result? This is the second run. The first run, it had lower average and minimum was under 1mb several times.
I ran the error scan, fast scan though, but no reported errors. -
It doesnt look like it's defective... do you have any processes running? Like a disk defrag, antivirus scan, etc?
That could explain why you have such low minimums...
@Racoon
HDD- I don't know what to say. My HDD is rated for 60ºC (WD Black Scorpio) and I have seen it go as high as 62-63ºC. Normally it sits at 50ºC and normally does not go above 60ºC. Keep a backup of your stuff and contact (this is, phone) your retailers to express your concearn.
CPU whining- I have the whining but it goes away with the bluetooth or high performance mode. More... it's not really that audible that people in a library will hear it. Even though, it is annoying and if I had it at all time it would burst my head. The C4 mode is not available through RM clock, so you will have to contact your retailer and explain them you can't deal with that noise.
Good luck -
I had som processes running, that may be the reason because i ran the test again and the result looked normal compared to others.
Thx for helping! -
did you try the error scan?
-
Only the quick scan and no damage. I started the long scan, but it seems it will take ages, så i cancelled.
-
i know what you mean.
i would do a full scan when you know you are going to be away from your laptop for an hour or so.
keep an eye on them temps. if they go above 60c when general brousing then contact your seller as thats not right.
my laptop has been on for a couple of hours now brousing and its on 46c but sometimes does go upto 51c -
Has anybody asked the guys at Kobalt about the whining noise?
-
I idle around 56-58, and formats or error checks or defragments get it up to 70C. The hard drive is fine; the cooling for it is not (reseller specific? how much did that piece of aluminum foil near the hard drive do? who here has that?)
edit: The system cools down to ~40C within 5 minutes of shutting it off (so, very good heatsink on the system overall), and the above is without a cooler, in a warm room (mid 80C), and the other temps are crazy low, so really, I'm pretty happy (but plan to fiddle with it more)My biggest factor is room temperature, for sure.
-
The temps on the test peaked at 63 with an average of 61 i guess. With general browsing, my temps are around 50.
-
I will run hd tune and post the results. Finally the customer service people responded but all they did was re assure me! No fixes. I can manage the whining noise in silent mode but the HDD temp is a real big issue.
How to post pictures in this forum? (My hd tune screen shot) -

I didn't mean to come off as rude. Just lots of the same responses lately. /me goes to make coffee, apparently needs some!
-
I idle at 52 when half of the laptop is in the air (small desk at home) and around 54-56 in my dorm. Goes up to 63. For gaming, I never have time to game so much but it goes at 60 max. 69 is getting hot but is it only when you game? I believe its kinda of OK if you are at ~55 for usual stuff.
For the whinning noise, I never understood this...well I can't here it except if I stick my ear around the Enter key. The only annoying noise I hear comes from the powerbrick. -
CPU buzzing/whining noise can be remedied easily:
... first make sure its not the mic receiving noise, so disable the mic (volume control)
download RMClock:
http://cpu.rightmark.org/products/rmclock.shtml
Vista users: make sure to run as Administrator and maybe disable UAC.
Make sure to check "Run HLT Command when OS is idle (restart required)" under the "Management" file.
also try to disable "C4 power state mode"
....or.... (if you cannot disable C4 power state if RMclock is not allowing... yet)
set Power Options to Max Performance. -
So here are my HD tune screen shots. though these show only a peak of 60c my hdd has gone upto 69c (i switched off my comp immediately fearing the worse). So i dont have any screen shots for that
That was when comp was idle for abt 30 mins or so and in silent mode. Amazingly my hdd runs at abt 45c or less when under intensive gaming (ie when my fan is on)
I guess frequently turning on the fan would be a solution to this problem. Also when the fan is at full blast even the whining noise disappears.
By "set Power Options to Max Performance." what exactly do u mean @gophan? can u elaborate please...
any other suggestionsAttached Files:

they look fine.
dont forget running silent mode turns the fan off so it will go a lot higher after a while. -
Mine idles at 53 but then I drilled holes underneath since It didnt have any, before that it idled at 55. But the mayor differance is that once it got up to 59-60 without the ventilation hole it never cooled down, but now it doesnt even go up to 58 with intense gaming, (stalker clear sky, highest settings)

Hmmm. I usually hit about 55-56 or so on load, without a cooler. 53 maybe, with a cooler. Idles at about 50. So, well, on the whole I'm not overly worried about my HDD. Couple years down the line it's gonna be time to swap it out for a new one.
Wonder what happens to OEM versions of the OS when that happens -ponder- Guess I'll wait for Windows 7 XD
The whining noise is pretty hilarious, though. Whine whine whine... Bluetooth on, whining off. Bluetooth off, whining on! Yeesh. -
Hey, i also have the m860tu.
When im not using my notebook cooler and gaming, my hard drive stays around 58-59 (after 4++ hours of gaming). This is the Seagate 320 Gig 7200 RPM that i bought and installed myself.
However your processor temps seem really nice, mine have got to 73 and 72 max. However i belive this is only for a few seconds and then the fan really kicks in, because whenever i check hardware monitor while gaming my procs are sitting usually from 62-67. (is there anywayz to find a average using harware monitor?).
as for the proc whining noise, i have heard this for 2-3 times, however ive never had to do anything, it has gone away on its own withing seconds......
lastly i think the highest ive seen my gpu is 74-78, once again after multiple hours of gaming without a cooler. -

Nothing? Really?
I was under the impression that if you change enough of the parts in your computer, that the OEM versions would eventually tell you to **** off. Was kinda worried about upgrading my CPU, GPU and HDD in the future. -
VV That makes sense; I remember some multiple component thing with XP. Vista actually has motherboard listed in the EULA, and I'm not sure it counts any other component. I recently looked this up for my brother, as he changed his motherboard + cpu out and bought a new Vista OEM license (had to? apparently, scams!). -
I know in XP each component was gived a score, so MB was 2, hdd was 2, gfx was 1, etc and you were allowed (I think) 3 points of change before it needed reactivation. Also microsoft say that no actual details about your computer are sent to them during activation and it is simply a hash (the technical meaning of hash) of your computer parts that it is associated with, so that vista is again 'you can change a few things, but not too many'
