My M860TU produces whinning noise even if the CPU load is 100%. Is this normal?

I thought the whinning noise is due to the CPU going into lower state (low load)? I hear the noise almost all the time, my BIOS is updated and the bluetooth trick doesn't work for me either. Even when I go into silent mode, I can still hear that noise.

Check to see if anything is coming into contact with the fan (stray wire maybe?).

Nothing in between the fan. I'm sure this is the sound that's coming from the CPU, it's not that loud but it is noticeable. This is the infamous whinning noise of intel c2d cpus but I'm not expecting it to be always present, is this normal?

Oh I see, so this is a known issue with these CPUs?

this is very common. i have seen it from numerous brands and its not just from one notebook. dell, msi, sager, compal etc all have this issue some do and some dont. there is no fix for it. i have swapped cpu's undervolted used tools etc on various different notebooks. it can be coming from the hdd, the cpu itself or possibly a coil or transistor on the mobo. my wife's notebook has this issue and there is no fix. i have done everything possible to get rid of it.

mrdj that is exactly what hers sounds like. i have swapped in like 5 different cpu's its NOT coming from the cpu itself. most likely a coil or something around the cpu at least on hers the cpu is not the issue the noise remains. and i also put her cpu we thought was originally the culprit in my notebook and it does not whine. so its limited to the mobo itself

i didnt have this noise until my bios was updated.
we had a long thread going about 6 months ago and for the majority of sufferers turning on bluetooth does stop this noise on the m860tu.

i cant really hear it on mine unless i put my ear close to the right of my nexus and it doesnt bother me in the slightest.

then the bios prob changed the voltage to one of the components on the board or possibly the cpu but as ive said ive swapped cpu's many times and that was not the cause of it. sounds more like something on the mobo imo.. kinda like a coil on some older crt tv's that scream when you first turn it on..etc..

Mine doesn't sound like morse code because it is continuous. It bothers me a little bit but turning the bluetooth didn't fix the problem. My BIOS is updated and it didn't fix the problem. So I guess there is no solution to this? I've read somewhere that many people who updated their BIOS also didn't fix their whinning noise problem, same case as mine I guess.

A lot of issues you've posted lately have been covered by many many threads since August 2008 and some of them have really good solutions and suggestions for the problems. One of the solutions that works for most people for the whining noise is setting a lower energy state for your CPU in RMClock (I sort of forget what tab is checked, as I haven't done it, C4 tab?).

^^ also did not work for me. tried that as well just fyi. as i said the SAME CPU in another notebook DOES NOT WHINE so i do not think it is related directly to the cpu itself

I think Z has done those solutions and still did not work for him. So I'm guessing it's really not with the CPU because I have an old laptop that produces the same whining noise.

correct its not the cpu causing this. i took 2 notebooks EXACT SAME MODEL AND SAME SPECS and used the SAME CPU it whined in one and not in the other. also bios settings and everything were exactly the same. even the hdd was the same model and firmware. i even swapped the rest of the parts as well i swapped the hdd, wifi, ram, dvd and as before the cpu did NOT WHINE on the second system and still did on the first. this is not a direct result of the cpu

You took it out and put it into another notebook? That's impressive! Also really interesting (so what's this cpu low energy state rumor). I wonder if it's vibrations, fan noise, hard drive related then. Have you switched out hard drives and tested that at all?

yes exactly. i put the cpu in another notebook and no whine. also swapped every other component out as well with both notebooks. one whined and the other didnt period. not from the cpu. i asssume the low energy setting is affecting something else as well as the cpu causing it to subside on many notebooks, but i have had numerous notebooks that whined and swapped in prob 4 or more cpus to those and it did NOT fix the issue.

That's kind of worrying and makes me wonder if there's something wrong with other components and whether improper current is being passed through any of them (overloaded, etc). Checked any voltages anywhere? (I wouldn't, just wondering how ambitious you are, hehe).

i can ill open it up this week and put a meter on some things. but imo i think its a coil or transformer
