Every now and then, I do a search to see if new info on the m4870 is out. Little snippets here and there but nothing concrete.

I always want to ask, where the cuddle bears are the m4870 cards?

Anyway, I was thinking about the bigger picture.

Do any Clevos come with ATI/AMD cards? Did they ever? I've only been in the club a year or so but I don't remember ANY card other than Nvidia's going into our machines.

in the current high-end Clevo notebooks.... all Nvidia.

Clevo did however design ATI gaming notebooks.... mid-range, but most Clevo importers chose to not carry them and just focus on the high-end ones.

In the previous generations of Clevo notebooks (like mine), there were options for high-end ATI cards.... like X800.

My first clevo was a P4 3.2 with an ait9700 in it. At the time the most powerful laptop on the planet. Dont know about where it rated on heat output but it had to be pretty high because that one suffered severe heat issues with the cpu being a desktop piece. Had a couple after that and both did me good service but were nvidia based. I just now purchased an ASUS W90 with 4870s but I still come down here since I like the clevos and could move back at my regularly scheduled two year upgrade.

Would the mobile version of ATI cards fit in the same slot aa as the nvidia cards?

if the ATI cards are standard MXM III or IV (2.x) then it would fit fine.

as for it working, the system's BIOS must be updated to fully recognize the card.

It's odd that my manual mentioned the 4870...

Clevo tests their initial systems with all videocards, but after it going to market, sometimes some of the videocards in the manual become "unsupported" ... due to stability/compatibility etc..

The M860TU was initially going to ship with ATI 3870... until Clevo deemed that it was a bit unstable.

Was the heat of the ATI HD3870 too much for the M860TU ???

it was not that at all.

Clevo seemed to say that it was not perfectly stable/compatible.... so they stuck with the Nvidia MXM cards instead.

Not to mention driver support for mobile ATI gpus is pretty lacking.

clevo would earn my respect 100% if they carried both high end ati and nvidia gpus.

as is i wouldnt mind swapping brand if i liked the ati gpus better

Hmm, I wonder if it's already supported in the BIOS. What exactly does it say?

Here you go. I'm not sure what to think, the 280M isn't listed but 4870 is.

    Thanks.

Now that is interesting. I bet the 4870 will drop in and boot. Also interesting is that the 4870 is 1GB DDR3, since the 4870 in the Asus W90 is only 512MB. I don't think a mobile 4870 with 1GB GDDR5 ever existed.

    Agreed 100%. I want ATI's new GDDR5/40nm technology... Or simply more choices (4850 for M860TU and 4870 gddr5 for M570TU).

well it isnt that weird that the 280m isnt mentioned as it is a new gfx card the 4870 is a bit older.
These manuals are copy pasted so it didnt surprise me that much.

the 280M isn't listed because it didn't exist when the model was launched and was a later addition, the 4870 was intended to be supported at launch but was later dropped, hence it is in the manual.

Do you see any 570TU's (or any clevos) with 4870s in them?

The GTX280M was released well after the 4870 and was in the clevo chassis immediately, why would they wait for the 4870s?

Now that I think about it, I've heard of one M860TU system with the ATi cards installed (3870). Only problem is that the owner bought it and lives overseas (around Taiwan, Hong Kong), where the the notebook market is much more diverse. A random google link (which I'm having trouble finding now) lead me to the forum where the owner discusses his purchase and it's harder for me to look for similar machines/situations now because getting the google translator to work decently throughout my web surfacing experience is more work than it's worth.

Mark of KillerNotebooks also tested the 3870 in the M860TU, and said it works.

Mmmm, I would love a 4870 or 4890 to stick in this laptop. But for now that just remains a pipe dream.
