I've owned an NP9150 with a 7970m since the summer release, and I can honestly say I have had no problems with it. Not a single one.
Being a forum lurker, I've seen a lot "rage" over the 7907m with all sorts of problems.
Every game I have run with the 7970m has played with high framerate, as long as I set the driver software to run the application with "high performance" (assigns the 7970m to processing it).
I've also tried literally every single driver release for the 7970m, including the default one sent with my laptop. I've pretty much noticed no change between them besides some FPS increase in BF3 and Shogun 2 as I've updated to the latest releases.
Seeing all the posts about problems with the 7970m, I bought it expecting to have to deal with problems, but I have encountered none.

Obviously the triple-A such as BF3 and Shogun will have good driver support because they're so popular.
On the other hand, try Borderlands 2 and some of other games in the under-utilization issues threads. Those are big titles but the support and performance just isn't there. The argument is still valid: Why pay 100% price when the card is only used 60-70%? Also, usually the frame rates are still acceptable, but it's just frustrating and not worth it to buy a card that you know is possible of more but there's no telling when or even if it will be fixed.
I really want the 7970m to get fixed, as well as AMD's situation because I want there to be fierce competition against AMD and Nvidia. It's better for us consumers.
Why have people had so much trouble with the 7970m?
