I was just wondering why is there no 3GB of RAM option on laptops (say from Xotic and/or PowerNotebooks) if the 32bit OS can't address 4Gigs anyways?
I understand if you want to choose a 64bit OS, then you'd have the option, of course. Even up to 8gb.
So then the real question is this:
Does dual-channel make much of a difference??
How is:
2x2GB DDR3 RAM (basically still 3GB on a 32bit OS) vs 1x2GB and 1x1GB DDR3 RAM?

Well, by putting in 4GB you market a little better.
Plus, you should still be able to access a little more than 3GB, which is always better than just 3GB. -
You can access in the range of 3.4 - 3.6 gigs (I can't remember which since it is soft, not hardware limited), so you might as well get 4 gigs and when you upgrade later it will be there.

Just choose the single 2gb module option... then newegg a 1gb stick and your three gb is there
-
Well, the price difference between 2x2 GB and 1x2GB + 1x1GB is small. And picking two modules of the same kind makes installation easier
And, when you want (who would?) to run Vista x64 there is enough memory and after Vista is loaded you still have 3 GB usable -
gateway did that with the p6831 besides with 4gigs you can use like 3.5
plus ram is really cheap these days
it cost me 40 bucks to get a 2gig ram for my gateway to me that is cheap -
ddr3 is not cheap (not yet). A 2 gig stick will run you 110 or so.

Yeah, I was talking about DDR3 since it's not that cheap...
Why is there no option for 3GB of RAM?
