HP adapter found here.
It looks like it has the correct plug on it to me, but I'd like to be sure before buying 3.

It meets the specs, but it is a little on the pricey side, I would look and see if you can find 180W Targus universal supply for less. Otherwise seems ok to use with your lappy.
-
I need shipping to Korea, and I need them now. The targus is discontinued. I don't mind the price, it's still way less than $120 for the official w880cu adapter.
-
Wow! when did the Targus become discontinued?
And I thought $61 bucks was steep. Shipping to korea is $41 for the first one and $13 each additional unit. -
Ya, I'm used to that though.
The Targus was discontinued last month. There was a tonne of eBay sellers, now there are none. Honestly, I prefer a solid connector, rather than a multi-plug. -
I urge you to go for a solid connector. I think Soviet Sunrise pointed out somewhere that the DC Jack of the W870/860CU is not made for 180W, so it will run hot. Normally this will not be a problem, especially if you use high quality connectors. I once bought a replacement Targus PSU for my ECS 736 (which needed a lot of power thanks to the P4 desktop CPU). The connector literally melted away and destroyed the whole DC jack... cheaper is not always better, especially if your going for a stronger PSU. I think it's not so much Targus fault but just the fact that multi-connectors are definitely less resistent to heat since they have to be more flexible and stuff they are made out of plastic that has a lower melting point. However, I have to admit that poorly applied thermal paste and as a result a CPU that ran very hot and the fact that the DC Jack was directly next to the CPU contributed to this. Anyway, for those reasons I'd probably only go with a Li Shin 180W PSU.
-
I understand your point, which is why I'm going to order 3 of these tonight. I have a high oppinion of HP parts, and it looks like the connector is correct. Or atleast, no one has said otherwise.
I remember someone stating they could put a small heatsink on the DC jack, I may try that.

This. http://forum.notebookreview.com/6469725-post24.html
You can find a few other auctions that have a better deal for your region. http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=m570&_nkw=0415B19180. The one in your opening post is one of the best deals right now as of this post.

Be very careful with the plug. It is not only the additional leverage I mentioned in my linked post above, but if the universal plug end separates from the adapter end while the PSU is plugged in, or even worse if it it plugged in to your notebook while it is operating, you will be in for a real shock. Pun intended. -
I did order the m9700 one I linked in my post last night, so I don't have to deal with any multi-plugs. Once they get here, I'll order a 940XM and get to testing.
Seeing that you posted scared me a little though, I thought you were going to say it wasn't compatible for some reason. lol -

I would be more concerned with what you're going to do with your machine after you get the PSU rather than the PSU itself. I've already had two locals with W8x0CU's run their systems to the ground after reading up NBR "material" without the proper precautions. It's painful to see resellers take the brunt of the end-user's irresponsibility when they send off their RMA'ed paperweights.
-
I got mine cheap from a Chinese reseller with a 30 day warranty, so I'm on my own. I always try to err on the side of caution, so hopefully I don't kill it.
I've already undervolted the GPU, I have a low power SSD coming and I plan on turning hyperthreading off if my tests work out like I think they will. That should add enough envelope to make 3GHz reasonable I hope. Also, throttlestop existentially lets your choose how much power you want the CPU using. Going ridiculous with a 90w TDP is not something I would try. -

Is this: 180W AC Adapter Fits Alienware Area-51 m9750 0415B19180 - eBay (item 380197151571 end time Oct-10-10 12:09:15 PDT) the only 180W PSU that will work with W860CU? Is it the cheapest we can find already?
And what difference would the plug of that be compared to the right angle plug of the default 120W that came with our W860CU laptop? -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
Other variations of this PSU will work as long as the VDC output range is within 18-20V, and if the plug is the typical 2.5/5.5mm barrel kind. Almost all fanless PSU's for notebooks are made in China, so many of the PSU's made by different Chinese manufacturers are strikingly similar, so just pick the cheapest one.
The plug is the same as the 120W unit; a right angle, 2.5/5.5mm barrel.
The link in your post is the same unit I linked to a while back. I bought one from the seller a few months ago and modded it. I replaced the original aluminium slabs with $40 pure copper slabs. The 180W unit weighs just as much as my old 220W unit now. But the thing is, the size of the 180W unit is similar to the 120W one, except wider. It has become my primary home/road adapter now. -

Oh ok. Is this the cheapest you can get? I am seeing some of the HP 180W in the $40 range, why are they priced low compared to this Li Shin?
SS, do you still have some 180W PSUs up for sale? Or are they even necessary for a system that is not overclocked? -
Even at stock with a non extreme, the adapter can get mighty toasty.

All of my 180W units were sold out within 24 hours of mentioning them for sale on NBR a long time ago. The only one I have left is my own 180W one.
Can you post a link to the specific auction? I did a quick skim search of eBay for the model but all I am seeing are the ones that have the big Dell/HP barrel plugs, which are not compatible.
The W860CU does not need a larger PSU if you do not have plans for overclocking. You will see zero benefit from having an additional 60W of reserve power unless you like carrying more stuff and spending your greenbacks just for the hell of it.

My fiance uses her MSI's PSU to keep her feet warm during winter time. I use mine to keep my hot chocolate warm in the lab. -

I didn't realise that the barrel plugs are not compatible with our laptops, nevermind.
So you're saying that even if I have a 940XM and a GTX 470M in the future, I am still well off in using just a 120W with no power problems? -
Like Soviet said, if you don't plan to oc that 940XM it would be alright, but obviously you are planing to do so otherwise it would be unwise to get an extreme i7, so in you case a stronger PSU would make sense.
-
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
I'm not really planning on having a 940XM, in fact I'm thinking of downgrading from my 920XM now. I'm just curious about having a higher rated adapter.
Does PCHub have these kind of PSUs for our laptops? -
This? Why are you not overclocking that 920XM of yours? An to what CPU you wanna downgrade? I'm sure some i7-820QM owners would like to trade their CPU + cash for your 920XM, including myself ;-).

Too hot to overclock in a tropical country like ours (Philippines). Ambient here is around 33-35C.

The barrel in the picture of that eBay link seems to be straight. I can see the same here: AC Adapter for Lishin 0415B19180 19V 9.5A 180W Area-51 M9750 M9700i-R1 Series Laptop Brand New . Or are the pictures not accurate? Is it at right angle also? Is the right angle plug any better than the straight plug? -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
UnitedSale is a bogus site. Do not buy from them. The one in the eBay link is a right angle plug, not straight.
-
yo SS, so those psu from the ebay are better and more recommended to the targus universal 180w psu?

Will this AC adapter work with the w870cu/w880cu?
