Intel has refused to release USB 3.0 drivers for Win8 even though they just released an updated driver for W7 in the last few weeks. I was affected by this, and so may you. Intel 3.0 users have noticed their USB 3.0 are running at 2.0 speeds or just not functioning correctly. On Intel Community forums a user tweaked the INF so it will install on W8. I've seen a difference, maybe it will for you.

    How to install:
    - Metro screen
    - Go to PC Settings
    - General
    - Scroll down to restart
    - Go through troubleshoot until you see option for restart with boot options
    - Once it restarts, press 7 to disable driver enforcement
    - Once it boots, go to Device Manager.
    - Manually update the USB 3.0 Extensible Controller (Microsoft)
    - Restart

Includes the INF and latest USB 3.0 Driver

I've tried those "hacked" infs last week and my USB 3 ports stopped working altogether.. I blame my SB CPU for that but maybe I'm just making stuff up. The controller sits on the board, doesn't it?

After I installed them I had an unidentified device sitting in device manager - didn't have the time to troubleshoot because I needed to transfer a couple of hundred GBs between two external hard drives so I just did a quick system restore and ran the copy job at USB2.0 speeds.

Maybe I'll give it a try again later today.

@littlecx Are you sure you have driver enforcement disabled as instructed? .

Also you only need to update the controller, not the hubs. When you reboot, a us 3 hub will be installed and your devices will install plg n play etc

    @buuky, no idea.

If I'm not mistaken, the USB 3.0 controller has a separate driver altogether; it's not part of the chipset, so even a chipset update doesn't help.

    is this stable, though?

    quick update:

I was ready for another test run just now and I started off with just copying a bunch of files with the default win8 driver my Microsoft..

it caps out at 92MB/s copying to external Seagate USB3 HDD.. looks like this is the HDD itself limiting at this point, not the interface..guess I don't need the hacked inf win7 driver by Intel after all. :)
