I have the computer spec'd below.... For some reason Windows Update isnt offering to install SP1... I have checked, I do not already have it installed, and as far As i know all my drivers are up to date.... All i have is 1 optional update for a
Morotorolo Inc. Modern - Morotorola SM56 Speakerphone Modern that I havent installed because I have no idea why I need it...
what the deal?
-
-
Thats an update for your built in modem. Even if you don't use it you need to keep the drivers for it up to date as they may affect other things in the system (it might also be why you're not being offered SP1). Unless you disable it via the device manager you will keep getting the prompt to install this update.
-
Alright well I let Windows Update install that and im still not getting an option for SP1??
-
Microsoft aren't forcing it out just yet. Your computer will only download it if Microsoft think you need it. Why don't you just download the five language package from Microsoft's website? It will only install what you need but it is a big download (434MB). Here's the link: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...6D-5EBB-413B-89C9-CB3D06D12674&displaylang=en
-
I'd rather just get it when WIndows Update does it for me.... so ur saying that right now Windows doesnt think I need the update thats why its not doing it? When will it decide I need it lol?
-
You aren't alone. It isn't available to me either via Windows Update, and thanks to my craptacular internet connection here in the wonderful wonderland of Afghanistan I can never fully download the stand-alone without being disconnected at some point.
I have one update(KB937287) that failed to install several times, and when I tried to install the stand-alone of it Vista said it wasn't needed(or something like that) and didn't install it. Not sure why I can't get SP1. I'm on Vista 64-bit. Any ideas? -
(KB937287) failed for me too... but it eventually worked and now is in my log as having Succesfully Installed... so i dont think that is the problem.
-
Probably not.
I'd say try downloading the stand-alone. You should have more luck in that regard than me. What I need is a torrent of the legit stand-alone, so that if the download disconnects, it will hash check and continue on.
I must say though, Vista's been running great for me even without SP1. -
Mid April it is being forced out via windows update (according to Microsoft anyway) but....You may not get it then either as Microsoft originally stated that there was some driver issues causing SP1 to not successfully install on some PC's when they were running the beta of it. The exact drivers they did not specify. Realistically SP1 is not such a huge step up that people think as it contains all of the updates already available and a few extra ones that are to address stability issues. Its really only to bring it into line with Server 2008 as they would then share the same kernel.
Please don't think that it is not necessary as any update is a good idea to install, just be patient and keep ckecking Windows Update on a regular basis installing everything offered. -
You could use a download manager to do the same.
If you have a look at the torrent sites there are plenty of people sharing the "legit" version. The official file is titled "Windows6.0-KB936330-X86-wave0". -
ms has a list of "hardware for which sp1 isn't fully tested", and therefore won't offer it to any machines that have one of those components
the 5793 has realtek audio, which is on ms' list. dunno what the 5792 has but... -
I was at Fry's yesterday and a MSFT rep was there - she said it was due to a few driver problems and I also read it had to do mainly with Intel based machines. SP1 has been sitting on my HP AMD desktop since March 18.
She also said that internally, the employees were told NOT to do SP1 yet! -
Hmm.. I never recieved a notice internally saying not to install SP1. In fact I have it on my work computer now. But the rest of what she said is correct, it is due to driver issues and not wanting to mess up customers systems if at all possible.
EDIT: I have installed SP1 on both my Vista computers at home. Vista Ultimate 64 and one is my new Sager 9262 the other another Intel based desktop computer (E6600 OCed to 3.6Ghz). The notebook didn't require a driver update to have it offered but the desktop did. -
I'm pretty sure there is at least one update (KB something or other) that is required in order to be able to install SP1. I wasn't able to install it myself until I got the update (which I had to install manually since it kept 'failing' but stand-alone worked fine).
Sorry I don't have which specific KBXXXXX it was, I deleted all those files after I was done
-
I'm really sorry, and I have no intention of starting an argument, but (assuming, as I am, that you work at Microsoft), given all that's happened, and realizing that it's entirely not your fault in the least, you just made this too easy to be resisted:
It's just a little late for that, isn't it?
-
I should have been more specific since I am getting berated in the WIn OS forum for looking like I am a MSFT basher - I believe she said "We were told internally not to install the update now and we should wait until later this month". I think I got that right......
She did not define "We" or "internal". We are in Austin, Tx. -
Doesn't look like that from here.
-
A bit too late for what? Come on now, if you are going to speak up don't beat around the bush, just say what you mean.
I personally have had issues with SP1 and Vista too. After installing the driver on my desktop with Vista that would let me install SP1 it BSOD on me. And did the same one more time after getting SP1 installed. After that reboot, it's been smooth sailing.
What some people fail to realize though is that it's close to impossible to be able to test every update on every combination of hardware configurations. I know the testers do their best, I use to test many years ago myself. Now I'm a data analyst for the support group so I'm kind of far away from the testing end of the business, but somethings just never change and no matter how hard they try to hit every possible hardware config it just isn't possible with so many different devices out. <shrug> So say what you will, I know the product has issues but I can't take it personally when someone gets mad about it, and I don't.
-
AH, Tx. She probably works at one of the call centers. And no problem, I work on the main campus and I could see why they might tell people in the call centers not to install an update right away, they are far away from help if something goes really wrong as we have seen it some times can.
-
Hey so I am just bumping this back up ~
Its mid May now, and SP1 still isnt on my sager5792 (specs below)
Whats the deal? Why isnt Windows Update finding this and installing it? Has anyone with a 5792 had SP1 automatically installed from Windows Update? -
If you really want it, have you gone and downloaded it directly? According to Microsoft KB948343, even though SP1 has been released to automatic update, there are any number of reasons why it might not be automatically offered through MS Windows Update. Check the KB, see if any of the criteria fit, and then go d/l it directly - why passively wait for MS to do to you what you can actively assist them do to you?
-
seriously just download it and install it. it will run perfect on your notebook
-
When i installed Vista 64 Ult. i had one driver for the TV card i had trouble finding because i could not identify the card. two weeks went by before that was solved.
Once i had found and installed the driver, Windows update offered the SP1 update 3 days later.
if it's related or not, I can't say for sure.
But that was my experance..
-
I would get it manually - But when i do a google search I get this download thats almost 1gig in size now because its the 5 language pack. The page also says I should wait for Windows Update because that update will be more appropriate (I assume size wise because it wont include 4 languages I dont need?)
Does anyone know where I can get just a english version of the latest SP1? For Vista 64bit. -
This is the 5-language pack although it is only 726.5MB direct from M$
Vist SP1 5 Language 64bit
As far as I can tell, this is the only standalone version (apart from the all languages version) -
Gah isnt that much larger than the Windows Update one? I Dont wanna clog up my HD with all that extra languages i dont need grrrr.
-
I dunno about sizes, but the all-language version I found here is only 544MB.
If you don't want to go this route, and you cannot get SP1 from Windows update through either the express or custom update route, then you'd better review the MS KB article I posted earlier to determine what's missing on your system - if MS update isn't offering SP1 automatically, it's because of something missing on your system - if you can't figure out what, then backup your files, do a clean install of _Vista, and then do the automatic update. -
I dont think the Sager 5792 runs any of those hardware items or drivers that are incomptable with SP1 though does it?
-
It's not just a matter of having an incompatible piece of h/w or s/w, it's also a matter of whether or not certain s/w is missing.
-
@Shyster1 - the version you linked to is the x86 version, the x64 version is bigger.
@Garandhero - It's only the installer that's bigger, once you run it it will only install what is relevant to your system and afterwards you can delete the installer and your system will be exactlythe same as if you had used a windows update version. The only reason the standalone version is bigger is because it has to have everything for every possible system in it but as I said, it only installs the bits relevant to your system -
and what software could possibly be missing? Everything on this laptop is stock.....
-
Awesome.... can you link the correct one for windows 64bit? home premium
-
Already did...look up^^ (post 25)
-
haha got it thanks
-
Glad to help
-
so what is the difference between
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...4b-32b2-41cc-bd8b-d71eda5ec07c&DisplayLang=en
and
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...2a-9c9b-4579-b64a-09146a0ba746&DisplayLang=en
besides the size? why is 1 larger than the other? which is the correct one for 64bit vista? -
The first one (larger) is for 64bit (hence x64 in its name) and the second one is for 32bit (hence x86 in its filename)
