Windows update has recently shown an update for my screen(95% gamut matte), however, it is labeled as a lenovo display driver.

Is it a good idea to install this driver? So far I have ignored it but I would like the ruling of the forum.

I'm not sure if I would take a gamble with the Windows update for your display.
As with most Windows 7 updates, it should give you a brief description with some sort of details. Could you post those details?

If you want to take a gamble with it, you can try it out. Before you go ahead with it, be sure you know how to remove updates in case something goes wrong. Windows Update - Uninstall an Update - Windows 7 Forums

The other option would be to just hide the update and it shouldn't pop up ever again.

i wonder if there are any really good drivers for the display, perhaps they could make it run at a higher frame rate, although they are already easy enough to overclock.

There was a topic about bumping the frequency of the display about a month ago. It can be found here http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/660283-you-guys-know-you-can-overclock-lcd.html

I wouldn't recommend it, but the information is available.

I don't believe drivers affect this, but the thread may state otherwise.

i already did this and my display is stable at 95hz, but i use it at 90hz, just to round it off, and it is great and totally worth it, so smooth.
