Well, the time has finally come to retire my Asus G73jh. Frankly, it has been nothing but problems:
Faulty touchpad (ok, all of them are faulty)
Self-immolating battery (one day browsing the web, i felt it get reallllly hot, despite it being fully charged, and the laptop not gaming. I quickly yanked it, and the battery stayed hot, in the freezer, for 5 hours. For sure, it underwent a runaway reaction.. so dead battery)
Faulty power connection (now, without a battery, i find that just putting down my laptop will shut it down)
Dying GPU (textures are commonly messed up, despite changing drivers any ways (uninstalling, etc).
Case is coming apart (left side.. just nothing more than weak plastic that didn't stand up to regular home use... no travel).
So, i started shopping around, and despite liking Alienware, could not justify the price. Looking around a bit more, i remembered what a great value Sagers were (I had a classic 5680 back in the day; custom painted at an auto shop).
A friend recommended PowerNotebooks.... and now i have a new 9170 on order:

I know, i know.. the ""No Dead Pixel" Guarantee" is probably a waste.. but given that this is the last laptop i plan on buying for some time (first baby on the way!), i want it as perfect as possible. I went with the 90% gamut screen, since I love photography; a dual use laptop made the cost easier to swallow (speaking of which.. anyone know of any generic, pre-made color profiles for that screen?).
Anyway, can't wait (and while nobody cares, i had to share my excitement....)

Congrats on the order. When you can put a SSD in there, your photo editing software will love you.

Anyway, thanks guys! And thanks for no whooping me over the head for the no dead pixel order.. -

Yeah the 4 pin clevo adapter is a bit more sturdy that the others
Good balanced setup too, enjoy -
Either way, I do hope this holds up better than my Asus did.. -

Hey man, drop us a line or email donald@powernotebooks if you were ordering from us.
-
Yep, I ordered last night, and actually spoke with Donald. I will drop another line; hopefully it is not too late..
-
OK, I guess he isn't in yet, but I have left him a message just in case.

Good thinking on the dead pixel guaranty. I know most think it is bs, but i am staring at a stuck pixel on my new np9170 debating whether to return it or not.

It really is down to personal preference and if you can live with a stuck pixel.

I actually just ordered my second Sager laptop from them as well! I was so pleased with my NP8150 that I ended up passing that along to my younger brother, and ordering a 9150 for myself. Hopefully I don't have as many problems with the 7970m as some other users are!

Congrats on the purchase. I plan on ordering one of those this weekend.

You will be happy with it, Im sure. After all, whats not to like about it - strong chassis, cheap price, strong hardware and professional looks.
And you can always get the best advice out of our ever growing community of laptop gurus and experts here.
I want to ask for some info about the Asus you owned.
1.) Does it fit in a regular laptop carrying bag?
2.) How strong are the display hinges?
3.) What is the overall build quality?
4.) More details on the power connector issues?
The reason Im asking is for personal reference. Maybe I can stop some friends from buying Asus depending on the build quality.
I know the price is high enough, thats for sure. -
Gratz
can't wait to see your benches

1) It will fit OK if you gets bag that accommodates a thick laptop. It has a unique shape, the volume it fills isn't too different from other thick laptops.
2) The hinges are one thing that have so far been good, after two years, they still hold fairly tight, though there is some flop when fully closed (since there is no latch)
3) The overall quality though was a disappointment. On the left side, the case is separating, despite only use at home (don't take it on the road). Screw connections have obviously broken, and it shows no metal reinforcements. The touchpad (at least on the g73) is the worst touchpad I have ever seen (tons of info on the Asus forum).
4) The power issue is two fold. One, after two years, the battery malfunctioned and began a runaway thermal reaction, that I was lucky to catch.
Two, the power connection is obviously failing. Sitting down, if I touch the table the wrong way, it will lose its connection. Since I have no battery, this really causes problems..
Woo! Finally rejoining the Sager family - Np9170 ordered!
