Okay, so I recently (as in last night) got a Sager NP5796 running Windows Vista. A couple times so far, for no apparent reason, it freezes and won't respond. These have been times when I'm not even using it - I walked away to get food and come back and it won't respond. I'm getting worried about my new toy. Any advice, you guys?![]()

Hmmm...try checking the Event Viewer. Right click on 'My Computer' and select Manage; expand the Event Log and check the Application and System logs for errors in red.
-
I have a few errors... one reads: "Unable to initialize the security package Kerberos for server side authentication. " I...honestly have no idea what that means, but looking at the Microsoft webpage talking about the error other people have said that it freezes their computer.
There's also one that reads "The previous system shutdown at 3:18:04 AM on 10/11/2008 was unexpected." Which, while true, tells me nothing.
Thanks for your help! -

Did you recently install SP1? That seems to be the cause, but I'm not sure what the solution is.

I found this post on another forum
"I notice this issues too, I ran Autoruns ( www.sysinternals) then point tab "LSA Providers", look at ( HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\Security Packages) below kerberos is DLL running, so you can UNcheck and error gone, I do not know about other side-effect ?"
Not sure how safe it is for your system, but you could give it a shot. -
If it's not too painful, you might want to consider doing a reinstallation of the OS. Kerberos is a core part of the Win security authentication process, so if you're having problems with parts of Kerberos not loading/executing properly, you might have some bad/corrupt files deep in the core files of your current OS installation.
I would try contacting your reseller/Sager for OS support to see if they've got any better handle on what this error is, and how to correct it. -
I have similar problems with my Septo Hydra which is the Clevo M570TU. It randomly freezes leaving the pointer stuck some where or screen black if not beeing used for a while. Its using Vista 64-bit ultimate sp1 with everything patched. I even upgraded the video drivers from latopvideo2go.
I have run a couple of runs with 3dmark06 and played some Crysis Warhead without problems so it doesn't seen to be related to stress! -
I'm having same kind of problems. Unfortunately I haven't been able to isolate the problem.

I have found the cause of my problems. The driver for the WLAN card. I found a new driver on the manufacturers homepage and installed it. Havent had a problem so far.
My card was a Ralink but I'm not sure that its in your computers.
http://www.ralinktech.com/ralink/Home/Support/Windows.html is where I got it from anyway and upgraded the driver from 2.0.6.0 to 2.1.0.0 I think. -
glad it was just a software bug, but the following is good to know if it freezes again.
do a HDD check and memory check to rule out those hardware components.
for HDD checking:
- START > Programs > Accessories
- right-click on Command Prompt and "Run as Administrator"
- (in command prompt) type: CHKDSK C: /F
- then say Yes and restart to let Windows do a HDD scan and fix any issues.
for Memory:
- get MemTest86+
- burn the ISO onto a blank CD
- let it autoboot from your system when it starts in the tray
(you might have to set the CD/DVD drive as first priority boot device)
- then it will go through infinite "Runs" until you hit ESC.
If the HDD CHKDSK finds any bad sectors, the HDD may need replacement immediately.
If Memtest86+ lists any errors (shown in red lines listed on the bottom), then your memory needs to be replaced. -
Vista also has a built in memory test utililty. Atleast Ultimmate has.
It's not as thurough (wow. hard word there) as memtest. Administrative Toos -> Memory diagnostics tool. (requires reboot to do test) -
its normal for vista64x to freeze!!!
try vista 32x it runs faster without freeze. -

Hi,
I am having the same random freezing problem with my Zepto Hydra,
I have downloaded the RALink network drivers and installed them and the problem is still there.
I have totally no idea where to look.
When it freezes, everything literally freezes totally to the point that even the event viewer does not log anything at all.
Can someone please advice ???
Thank you and Regards

I have the same issues, well the freezing part on my 5796, at first i thought it was the fingerprint reader like someone suggested, did the update thats on cleavo's site for it and it was fine for week, but lately it has been freezing, only when the computer is idol. Did both HD check and mem check and no problem there.

sounds like software conflicts.

Can you guys do a test on this issue? I'm experiencing this as well. Just leave your computer running overnight (6 hours or more) with the balanced or power saving power plan and see if it freezes the next day. This means no touching of mouse or keyboard. Can you state your CPU specs just for the record. Sounds like the CPU going into C4E or C6 mode and the BIOS might not like it. Seems to freeze on both 32bit and 64bit?

I have T9600 and 64 bit Vista Ultimate

Microsoft says this is a error which you can ignore ??
I think i've solved it now by rolling back to a older driver for my gigabyte wlan card. But i'm not sure yet. Keep us posted if you find out anything -
freeze we experience is from a 5796 P8400 9800m GTX after 1-6 hours of idling

I have random freezes too (usually when it idles) with Windows XP. Now I installed Vista, I hope it won't freeze again (it freezed at Vista install).
I see a lot of others have problem too...maybe the NP5796 modells are defective?
ps: I've puted a brand new HDD in it and when I came back, it has freezed at Vista install (last step).
Worried about freezing
