Hey folks!
Recently reformatted by Sager NP5793 purchased way back in 2008 and was wondering if it was worth putting a $100-$200 in to try and bring it up to par a bit more. My only goal is to play basic games (Hearthstone, LoL, SC2, D3) at minimum settings with a decent FPS. At last use, I was forced to playing D3 in a lower resolution, windowed mode to maintain playable FPS.
I'd considered upgrading to an SSD and new GPU, but wasn't sure if a suitable GPU would still be available, given that I'm guessing an 'upgrade' would be at least 4 years old itself.
If it does make sense to look into a new GPU, are there any models that folks would suggest? I'd assume I'd want something older as the rest of the hardware will create a bottleneck with something too new, but how old?
Thanks for any input!
TL;DR Worth trying to upgrade, or just buy a new laptop?
Specs:
Intel T8300 "Peryn" Core - 2.4G (Centrino)
160GB - 7200PM HDD
4G DDR2 Ram
Nvidia 8800M GTX

I would suggest looking at a new machine and getting up to date on all the components. But it comes down to what your budget it. You won't need to go top of the line to see a nice improvement. The NP7358 may be a good one to start with.
You will find replacement GPU's are still pretty pricey even for older models.Jase428 likes this. -
congratulations on still having a working 8800gtx
only real upgrades on the gpu would be a 9800gt or a 260gtx (not sure about any others) but they are very hard to get hold of.
as Hutsady said the best route would be a new machine.Jase428 likes this. -
Appreciate the replies. about what I thought I'd hear, but wanted to check.
I actually bought it from you guys over at Xotic all those years ago, so glad to have your input.
Thanks to you both!

Quick follow-up question.
Looks like I can grab a GTX 285M/280M for about $100 off ebay. I'm assuming that would be compatible from what I've read of the 260's working?
Looking at the specifications for each, I'm not sure what type of performance increase I could expect for $100 or if I'd just bottleneck at my CPU/RAM before taking advantage of the card.
Am I just putting lipstick on a pig at this point trying to jump 2 generations on my GPU? -
If you're worrying about CPU bottlenecks, you can still get the highest end CPU compatible with your motherboard. The T9900 I believe. Single core performance is actually comparable to current gens considering how old it is. Should be fine for the games you've listed. I'm not too sure about the gpu though haha.

I don't know that you'll gain much performance even if you did upgrade, as far as playing more recent games. Better to sell it, get a few hundred for it at least and buy a new one. Even a machine with an 860m will kick the pants off that ol' reliable.

i didnt get any readings with the 8800gtx in the alienware crap i had as it never worked in 19 days of owning it.
my clevo with a 9800gt (re badged 8800gtx) got between 9200 and 9500 in 3dmark06 benchmark and when that was changed to a 260gtx i was getting 10,100-10,200 so at a guess expect a 280/285 to give about 10,500-11,000
but as mentioned that still wont help much for newer games as my present 680gtx is scoring 21,000-23,000
