Would a WXGA on a 5760 be stupid?

Hi everyone. I got another question. I know, I know. I've been asking a million questions, but I'm trying to figure out the best configuration for me.

I found a reseller, www.rjtech.com, that will put a glossy WXGA+ (1440x900) screen on a 5760. I don't think I've ever seen ANYONE do this besides on the lower-end 5750. I definitely want the Nvidia 7950gtx. Downgrading the screen will lower the cost by around $140. The money I save, I want to put towards a faster C2D processor.

On my desktop, I usually have the resolution at 1024x768 on two 19" CRT monitors. I like to have the font a little larger because the smaller font hurts my eyes. I'm not terribly concerned about desktop real estate, because I plan on buying a new LCD screen also. Even when I use my old 15" laptop, I keep the resolution at 1024x768.

Now my concern, am I an idiot for wanting to do this? It seems to be the consensus that WSXGA+ is the sweet spot for 17". But if I plan on lowering the resolution anyways, should I go ahead and save the money by getting a lower "native" res?

How much will the clarity, color, and sharpness degrade if I have a 17" WSXGA+ (1680x1050) and lower it to a non-native 1440x900?

Anyone know how games look on a native resolution 1440x900 with a Nvidia 7950gtx graphics card? How about a non-native?

Does anyone have experience with the Sager 5750 WXGA+ screen? How's the quality? Any thoughts, praises, or regrets?

How much will I regret not getting a WSXGA+ screen?

I've gone to stores and played around with both native resolutions, yet its hard to tell since companies have such different quality screens. I've seen some great WXGA+'s and some terribly awful WSXGA+'s. Plus you'll never be able to tell until you actually bring the notebook home.

So knowing my background and preferences, what do you guys think is the best thing?

Thanks again everyone. The notebook community's continuing knowledgeable support is much appreciated.

its not a bad thing to have a 1440x900 resolution.

Its up to each person's preferences.... especially if your budget warrants it.

Most people go for the higher resolution so that they can have much more room to work with while doing thing within Windows (like Word, Photoshop, etc...)

The size of the high native resolutions (WSXGA+ or WUXGA) should not be a concern since you can easily remedy it by going into the Display Properties > Settings tab > Advanced button ... and then set the DPI to large. The font is easier to see and everything stays "pixel perfect"... rather than turning down the resolution and getting ugly stretched imperfect desktop.

You definitely need to go to Best Buy or other store that sells notebooks and take a look at a 17" on display. Usually store models have WXGA+ but some have WSXGA+.

I'm thinking that WXGA+ is the best choice if XGA on a 19" is the current limit for you.

If it was offered by Eurocom (still not getting why they do not), I would have chosen the 16x10 resolution. Yes 1920x1200 is quite small on a screen this size. On the other hand, that's what is making it so gorgeous. You simply don't see the pixels and fonts with cleartype enabled are superb. 14x9 would have been unacceptable to me, but if all you can do on a 19" is 1024x768, go ahead, you'll be staring at the screen for long times. On my part on a 19" I'd go 1600x1200, but all we have here at work are 12x10 and it's not enough to my taste.

Not really. Upping the SPI and even setting the defaults to large/extra large fonts only changed things n your desktop and stuff. Internet browser texts and stuff are still small. But, I like it small. :)

I think you are getting the advice you need, WXGA+ sounds like it might be the right resolution for you.

One of the plus sides of a WXGA+ screen is that you will be able to game at native resolution with 4xFSAA for a very long time. Even as new games come out with new features, those of us playing on a 7950GTX with a WUXGA screen might have to drop down to 1440x900 just to keep performance up. For what it's worth, 1440x900 with 4xFSAA produces a pretty awesome gaming experience.

Later tonight I will post a picture I took of the Dell Precision M90 with a WXGA+ screen next to my xVx Monstruo-M S400 (also a Clevo 570u like the Sager 5760 you are looking at). Both screens are displaying the same picture so you can get a sense of the size differences. In this particular comparison, the Matte WXGA+ screen of the M90 almost feels cheap compared to the WUXGA Glossy of my S400, but I've seen NICE WXGA+ Glossy's out there, so it may not be comparable to the one you are getting from a picture quality standpoint.

Either way, buy what you like! A recent tour of Best Buy and Circuit City didn't give me what I was looking for as far as comparative options, every 17" in the joint was WXGA+. You might have to get inventive with your search if you want to see both of them side by side BEFORE you make a purchase.
