Hi everyone, I bought one of the Sound Blaster X-Fi expresscards for my NP5790 and it works great with my headphones (I think it's better than my headphone jack; It never worked lol). When I don't have headphones plugged in it doesn't affect my on-board speakers quality at all, it just uses the Realtek HD audio panel as well...I've tried Creative's automated support and that was no help.

Has anyone else had this problem? Can someone with an NP5790 or like model explain to me the steps to get the card to work with my speakers? If so that would be amazing :)

    Thanks in advance!

the onboard speakers use internal soundcard only, which is realtek.
ps. you can't change it to use creative.

I have those really nice Bose In-ear ones? I think they're just called "Bose In-Ear Headphones" =P

Is there a reasonably better pair I should maybe look into?

You could use your notebook speakers.

My Audigy 2 ZS PCMCIA has a Creative program called "Feature Mode Selection Utility"
    - it lets you enable the notebook speakers to work... just takes a bit of testing to get it working.

Not a big deal, the only reason I bought the card is so I had a working headphone jack =P

I'm on summer vacation right now in my hometown so I don't have all my stuff I normally would, that's why I wanted to use my Notebook speakers =P
I've got some nice speakers at home...

i think u can route the audio via creative X-Fi through ur notebook speakers!!

    At least i can! :D

    * Just open ur "Volume Panel" frm the windows taskbar!
    * Click on "Main Display"
    * Now u can see several small icons signifying X-Fi's features! click on the icon towards extreme right(situated on RHS of the "Mixer" icon)

    * it should say "Playback through Notebook Speakers"! :)
    * Tick the check box in there and click on "test"

That should get it working!!! :D

btw there ain't much of a difference as onboard speakers r not that powerful!! :(

    Hello all.

The "Playback Through Notebook Speakers" feature of this card, does allow playback through your laptop's speakers. HOWEVER, it does not apply any of the features from the control console (ie. crystalizer, 3d-surround emulation.. nada.). This wouldn't be a problem at all, if you use headphones directly plugged into the card.

And if you have the wireless audio, it WILL stream to your speakers (with all the applied features).

Best bet though if you want good sound, invest in some good headphones. I own the Bose In-Ear, and am not pleased. For the money($100US), I expected much more. For $20US though, JVC makes a set of buds called Marshmallows. These are much much better than the Bose set, at 1/5th the cost.

I also use a set of eSone Studio Monitor headphones for games sometimes, and if you're going to spend $100 on headphones, spend it on these! These, though not designed for gaming, provide the best quality with frequency response of ANYTHING on the PLANET.

    Hope this is helpful.

Oh, BTW, I'm currently trying to find a away to apply the settings to the laptop speakers with some help from Creative's Tech support. I'll re-post if I find any solution to our dilemma. Seems a lot of customers who own the X-Fi Notebook want to do the same thing.

I am also unable to get it to work through the notebook speakers, when i first purchased it it actually worked perfectly but a week later it stopped working and i cant even enable it through the creative console (when i tick the box next to enable audio playback through notebook speakers and then exit out and go back in, it shows it as unticked) I have tried uninstalling everything and reinstalling and have even installed a fresh copy of windows but still nothing. I have been in contact with creative but they keep sending me useless troubleshooting tips which have no help.
If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.

Also keep ur realtek drivers updated cuz the notebook speakers work via realtek!! :)

+ try running Creative diagnostics(bundled with the software package) and see what it says!

+ set the default audio device to 'creative X-FI SB audio (vista)'

    :)
