My new machine works great overall, but it has this problem where it will freeze after a restart. Sometimes it freezes at the log in screen and sometimes it lets me log in but then freezes after that. As soon as it freezes the fans come on full speed and it sounds like a wind tunnel. I have to go through several cycles of restarting and logging in before it finally takes sometimes after the 5th or 6th time.

I already set fast start to off. Anyone have this problem or know what to do?

Here is a video link showing what happens.

Does the laptop ever shut off by itself after the fans spin up to max? If not, that's a good thing because it's probably a software problem in that case. Either try reinstalling windows or prepare a bootable USB with some linux distro so you can attempt to use the system.

I don't let them run for long because it is annoying. It hasn't shut off after up to 5 minutes. If I reinstall windows will I lose all my other software (Bitdefender, Office, etc)?

Yes. Perhaps use another computer to prepare a bootable USB with another operating system on it first then. Try booting from that and see if this behavior persists.

You can also do a repair install keeping files and folders and programs. I'd speak to your reseller.

ok, I found it. That did not fix the issue. It still locks up.

    Any other suggestions?

Here are some ideas off the top of my head:

+ If you check Windows Event Viewer system entries, are there any entries around the time of the freezes? If so, you can investigate that.

If you cannot find anything there that relates to about the timings of your freezing, my next guess is either system or memory.

+ If you boot into Safe Mode, then try to start with networking... log in, mess around some. Does it lock up then? If not, it could be driver related.

+ Another thing to check would be to get memtest86+ or memtest86, make a bootable USB, and then run memtest to make sure memory is doing OK.

You could start hardcore with a full Cmos reset and a fresh install.

You will have to reinstall your applications.

If you use a Microsoft account and OneDrive sync, many files will be restored automatically.

If the problems still persist then:

Start with the basics which consists of testing:

Memory - Memtest86 (This runs independent of any OS from a bootable USB drive)
CPU -CB15, CB20, RealBench 2.56 (In this order)
GPU - Uningine Superposition (Focuses on GPU only)
Overall System at once - TimeSpy, FireStrike (Tests a combination of CPU, GPU, both)

    Avoid Prime95 and Furmark.

Make sure you have HWmonitor/HWInfo running to keep track of your vitals (Mainly thermal and check for throttling along with quick glances at power limits)

You can take an image backup of the machine also.

Did you try clearing the CMOS already? Maybe it has too much of an undervolt.

Unplug the AC. Remove the battery and unplug the CMOS battery. Wait about 20 seconds then plug in the AC adapters. Press the power button. The light on the power button will briefly flash. Wait. It will turn on. Fans will ramp up. Wait. If it does not power cycle by itself after a couple of minutes, long press the power button to shut it off, then turn it back on and wait. It should power cycle a couple of times, then you will see a message on your screen that NVRAM was reset. Set any special value in the BIOS (if you were not using defaults) and see if the freezing issue is gone. If it is resolved, undervolt less. About -100 seems like a good spot for a stock 10900K.

i have the exact same problem with my X170sm. it really a software problem. For what i saw,, i think the problem is most likely the control center. If you remove the control center, the bug go away but you can't control your fan anymore and when it work hard the system crash. I'll try to reinstall everything to see if he help.
