    Hello,

i am facing the following problem. My nephew wants to upgrade his pc with an SSD and he has bought a Samsung 850 evo 500gb SSD. we tried installing it today and i am clueless at the moment.

    Specs:
XMG P704 mobile intel HM87 Express Chipset
    Two Changeable 2.5" 9.5 mm (h) Hard
Disk Drives (HDD) / Solid State Drives
(SSD) with SATA Interface and RAID
    Level 0/1 Support

Currently there is a 1 TB HDD and works fine. So i told him to replace the HDD with the SSD and we will install windows 10 education. However, the SSD cannot be seen in bios and neither does the windows 10 installation. this also occurs in an other laptop with exactly the same specifications (bought two identical laptops for 2 nephews).

    I have tried the following:
Bios update (both of them the EC and BIOS in correct order)
load drivers ( intel rapid) in windows 10 installation
Bios does not have IDE option only AHCI and Raid
    Remove Cd Slot
Only tried the Primary HDD bay
    tried UEFI enabled and disabled

The SSD can be seen with an usb external casing however i cannot update the firmware of the SSD due to limitation of samsung magician.

    so am i missing something?

the only things i can think of at the moment is that the SSD is faulty (even though it does work in USB mode)
2nd thing is my nephew does not know how to correctly install the SSD (unlikely cause he switched the HDD and the SSD repeatedly and the HDD always works)

I am not an expert so i tried everything i could think of even though it seemed unlikely it would work.

so if any of you have suggestions it would be greatly appreciated

The ssd is thinner, try the other bay, it may not plug in correctly without a spacer in the one you are using.

hmm that is really weird. i haven't seen the bay myself only through facetime. The odd thing is normally in other laptops there is some sort of bay to hold the HDD/SSD firmly into the socket or with a macbook they had this bumper of some sort. I guess i have no choice but to go myself and check it out.

Is it possible the drive is faulty even though it works in USB mode?

    other suggestions are appreciated.

If it connects via the usb adapter the drive is fine.

One slot is push in with the door holding it in while the other is screw in which is why I suggest it.
