Hey guys I have an older Xidax XM-6 custom gaming laptop and the parts are getting a little older, and games are getting harder to play. I am looking at upgrading my dedicated GPU, which is a GTX 765m. I am not sure if I should go for a 780m which is way more expensive costing around $300-400, or going for an 860m or 870m which are still better than my 765m but not nearly as expensive as the 780m. I am asking if any of these upgrades are possible so I don't buy a part, and then have to bring it back or something because I can't upgrade my laptop

Is this laptop based on some sort of Clevo? I can't seem to find ANY information about it...

    Yes xidax resell clevo

Not sure what generation though since they continue to use the same name - i suspect p170sm/sma

OP what is your CPU and when did you buy it? Knowing the exact chassis can show which upgrades have been successfully done

Any kepler->kepler upgrade is going to be underwhelming(nvidia kept renaming the same underlying kepler GPUs from 6 series to 7 series to 8 series with minor tweaks only)

and a full bore 780M may be too much for your heatsink as it will draw more power.

For a meaningful increase in power you want to consider upgrading to a 9 series (maxwell) or 1060 (pascal, current gen) . If budget is a limit the 970M may be a good option. It's the architecture changes that provide the biggest leaps in performance and efficiency.

I have an i7-4800mq, I have no clue what you guys mean by clevo and all. I know the Xidax rep I spoke to said the 765m version chassis is soldered to the motherboard so I can't upgrade it, but having it being a dedicated along with the fact that XIDAX is a very costly company, i'm sure they say that to get another $2000 out of me

No it does not. The keyboard is different, just like the ALT key on that laptop shows ALT GR, mine does not. I also do have the ONKYO logo on my keyboard, just not in the same spot, it's smaller and on the other side of the keyboard next to the power button, neither do I have the white letters on the vent right infront of the screen. I also have 4 LED lights on the top right of the keyboard. This computer only resembles the same color and a similar texture on the lid compared to mine, and that's really about it. No dent on the trackpack, nothing else is the same besides the color and texture, and of course the insides seem to be very similar (especially the GPU and CPU as they are exactly the same)

What we are trying to do is to find what Clevo model your laptop resembles on the inside. You need to check the port layout. Cosmetic stuff doesn't matter too much.

If not that then you can disassemble your laptop to check for yourself if the GPU is upgradable.

In that case open up the bottom of your laptop and check if the GPU is part of the motherboard or if it is on a separate card.

The tiny thing under the four screws closer to the fan is your GPU. If it's attached to the main board (and it looks like it is to me at least from what I can see from the photos) then it's not upgradable.

So if I unscrew that, and the GPU wont move then I can't but if I can take the GPU out I can replace it?

Don't unscrew that unless you have replacement thermal paste and thermal pads. You might need a flashlight. Search up MXM cards on Google Images. If the GPU is on a card, it will be obvious.

So essentially if the GPU slot looks like this then I should be able to upgrade it? This laptop is a clevo and I read a post on MXM nvidia cards from this website and it says clevo brand laptops usually have MXM cards, so upgrading is possible. But this example photo here doesn't have those metal bars around it like mine does? I'm sorry I hardly understand anything about this haha.

Do you mean the metal bars on the top which extends over to the fan exhaust? That would be the heatsink which is responsible for cooling down the GPU core.
