    I don't know
Honestly I'm not really interested in ssd, if I have to wait 10-15 seconds more with an hdd... well I can wait :)

I know, there are other advantages... but I think I can settle for a good hdd

thats almost like buying a porche and putting a mini engine in it :D
add a ssd at a later stage.
yes its all about speed and its not the be all and end all but a 10+ second boot up compared to a 30-40 second boot up will make a lot of noticeable difference.

The SSD will make the most difference in everyday usage than any other part of ur laptop.

Especially when it comes to multitasking (Photoshop + IE8 30 tabs + skype + Steam + Dreamweaver + Winamp + other background stuff).
With the SSD, the system responds magically. Not possible with any HDD.

the laptop has arrived, but I'm having some problems...
well one problem in particular, my laptop suddenly shuts itself down, no warning, no sound, nothing

I searched for informations and I know that usually this happens for overheating but I don't believe that this is the problem, this afternoon I played for about 15 minutes with torchlight 2, I quit the game and after 30 secs bum, it shuts down... I was able to read the temperatures and they were fine, 44 for the cpu, hdd: 43, gpu: 65...

I believe that the "culprit" may be the motherboard or the battery, tomorrow I will try to remove the battery and use only the psu....
I have also defragmented the hdd, check it and 0 problems, I have done some scans for virus or malware, nothing at all
no issue detected from action center, and nothing also from ccleaner....

I'm not really too happy right now considering all the money that I spent.... if I can't fix it I will send it back for assistance next week, damn

oh no, sorry to hear that man.
if it only arrived today i would put that sort of shutdown to maybe something lose through courier transport.
contact their support tomorrow if your not happy about doing this but i would suggest to remove the base and check the ram sticks arent lose as well as the hard drive. actually check everything is not lose like heat pipes, fans etc. but as youve done a defrag i guess it was running for quite a while even though you wont have much on it yet.
as far as i know the burn in diagnostic test is done for 24 hours and will have left the factory in 100% fully working order.

as your using windows 8 im not sure what lse to suggest.
hope its something simple and you dont have to rma it back.

faulty disk would at least cause a bsod or error message of some kind.

sudden shutdown without any prior warning could be due to one of he following reasons:defective psu/battery, defective cpu, defective mobo or thermals.

u already ruled out thermals, so id go through with the idea to try and reseat the cpu and also see what happens when u run on a/c or battery only. hope its smth simple like that!

    cheers

first of all thanks for the replies ;)

this morning I try to run it without battery, I used the windows memory diagnostic tool to test the mem, no problem...
then I played for 10 minutes, I wait another 10 mins after I quit the game and it didn't shuts down
tonight I will try again to run it without battery for at least 1 hour....
If the problem it's ONLY the battery well.... I will not be too happy but at least I can use it with the psu, not a big issue....

btw the laptop has arrived Tuesday but I've been busy trying to make it work...
maybe it's a stupid idea but... here in Italy we had some really really hot days and high moisture, today it's a little bit better, could that be the reason??
I always check the cpu/gpu temperatures since the laptop has arrived and they were always fine... but maybe something happened to the battery in those days??

no shutdown since I removed the battery (last friday), but I will wait at least a couple of weeks before saying "ok, problem solved"

I got a decent score with firestrike (no oc) : 4825..... so I think that my 780m is fine
I also did a lot of benchmarks with sisoftware sandra, everything seems ok

this morning I play a little with skyrim at ultra, fps was varying from more than 60 to 30, do you think that this is caused by the (non mature) driver ??

    gpu temp was between 75-70

Yes, it seems the 780m is being under utilised because of the lack of driver support at the minute. Myself and others are having similar issues.
Just have to wait for the drivers.

it's time for an update.... it's been more than 2 weeks since I removed the battery and guess what? no more shutdowns

I have to say that apart the problem with the battery the laptop is working really good, nothing to complain :)
the 780m is awesome (my last pc had a really really reaaaally weak graphic card...) but needs better drivers, it will take some time for that....

I have one question for the cpu temp, after more or less 30 min of playing guild wars 2 I had 64° to 67° (room temp is 26-27), are these temps fine?

those temperatures are totally fine. when they get closer to 90c is the time to ask the above question.
cleaning vents and fans out with compressed air every 3-4 months will help keep them down.

so did you contact their support and theve replaced the battery for you.

It depends on the game but those temps are just fine. My 4800 hits max while playing games 82 and my gtx 780m 78 degrees. I have a w703 not the same case

So long as the CPU is not having to throttle those are normal yes.

I have a really strange question for you guys...
I just started playing tomb raider 2013 (nice game and really good graphics), sometimes I had the feelings of some stuttering when lara walks, I check the fps with msi afterburner and the fps was always between 58 - 60 (I play with vsync and triple buffering, ultra settings).... so no slowdowns, I don't know it's a little bit strange

It could be rapidky flipping between 30 and 60. Try turning off vsync to test.

turning vsync off solved the issue with tomb raider, I think that this game is not well optimized for nvidia cards also...

but now I'm having another strange thing, when I run gpuz it shows the "computing cuda" disabled, everything else is normal.... what the... ????

wait, so computing cuda is not related to video games?
what is really strange is that few days ago it shows the "computing cuda" enabled.... maybe is just a bug of gpuz

It could well be, but cuda compute is used for engineering and CAD tasks and some group processing projects along with a couple of video transcoding programs.
